I'm building my first AR15 and was planning on ordering everything online. Now I see there is a gun show coming up in my area (Philly) and was wondering if that might be a better place to pick up all the parts. I'm trying to keep this thing under $700. If I'm gonna order this stuff I'll probably go with a $99 RRA stripped lower from Eagle Firearms, along with 5 mags. For the rest I'm thinking about a 16" CAR kit from J&T Distributing. I need to get the punches too. I'll admit I like the idea of being able to actually see and handle the stuff before I buy it. Taking it all home in one shot is appealing too, rather than waiting for UPS packages. Are these shows generally considered a good place to pick up parts/kits at reasonable prices? The last gun show I went to was in 1992, where my friend bought 2 SKS rifles and a huge case of ammo for $200! Sooo... Should I wait for the show next weekend (I think) or run down to my FFL guy tomorrow and have him send his stuff to Eagle Fireams and then place my order? Thanks |

I would at least try to get the lower reciever at the show. Your $99 mail order lower, by the time you pay shipping and the add on fee to the dealer who is going to have to handle the transfer, is going to end up costing you significantly more than $99, and you may be able to do as well w/an over the counter purchase at the show. Down here in Georgia, I can buy a Rock River lower, at theshow for about $15-$20 more than the mail order price, which ends up costing me about as much asit would mail order w/the add on charges. Uppers, barrels, small parts; I'd take alist of what you want, w/the mail order prices, and do some comparing, If you can do as well at the show, fine. If not, mail order what you can do better on that way |

If you are leaning toward J&T, they sometimes offer 10-15% off at the shows. Especially on the second day. I bought a kit from them by mail order, and could have got it at the show 2 months later and saved about $35.00. But I sure had fun with my AR for those 2 months.... Check their web site and see if they will be in your area. As far as lowers, I have never found a deal at the show that beat EE prices. Even with the shipping and transfer fee. Our last one in March, had Doublestar lowers going for $140 and DPMS forged for $160. These were the cheapest there. Much better to pick one up from ADCO or Quantico Arms IMO. |
