| Can I convert a standard 5.56 upper to 6.8 mm SPC by swapping out the barrel and bolt? I notice that model 1 has 6.8 mm barrels on sale and saw an ad for 6.8 mm bolts on the equipment exchange board. Are these two components all I need to convert my 5.56 upper into a 6.8 mm deer slaying machine? |
Yes, barrel & bolt |
| I'm curious, but how did Model 1 get the jump on the other companies that are going to be offering new rifles in this caliber?Like Barrett??I've been real tempted to buy the Model 1 kit but this question has me bothered. Are the cutting corners to get them out faster than the other guys? Are their bolts up to spec? And the kit isn't too expensive, another thing that has me wondering how their doing it? |

I have been wondering the same thing. I am on the very edge of getting the Model "1" 6.8 SPC barrel. How hard would it be to engineer a barrel? Somebody like Shaw or Wilson gets the case dimensions, and the bore is .270.... You would think that enterprising engineers could figure it out. Of course, it's going to take a few brave idiots like me to buy one and try it. If I were Remington, I would want to get the case dimensions out to as many barrel builders as possible. Remington isn't building rifles themselves, so how else are they going to push the market? If the only options for getting 6.8x43mm SPC is >$1000 uppers, they can forget it. C_M |
Again, the original post was this and the answer remains: Yes, barrel & bolt Yes, Timanator, I said "suppose to" and it means just that. There have been several projected dates for availability that have come & gone. We will have to see if the lastest dates are met. Sometimes, you just need to be patient when somethings are new. There is a customer that has a higher priority than anyone on this board. When it is available, it will not be initially cheap ( ~$153/case @ 200rds). Not the price of blasting ammo. Mags most likely will be the same initially. For the foreseeable future, once brass is available (either once fired or new), reloading will be the cheapest option. Which is what I and others plan on doing. There are "rumors", that other US ammo manufacturers are looking at it, again rumors at this point. We will have to be patient and see what actually happens. Near term, not everyone is going to be able to afford it ,thats called life. But, I don't see 5.56 going away anytime soon, if at all. So I'm not sure why so many people seem to concerned at this point in time. Time to get back to work... Edited for typo... |
yes, barrel and bolt -
Carbine_Man is right on the money! Model "1" has worked with Remington to manufacture the 6.8 uppers. |

According to recent articles in SOF (April/June 2004 issues, "Exclusive! The 6.8mm Combat Cartridge, 2 parts) , the reamers, dies and mag issues have all been resolved and Remington and another (sorry can't recall) ammunition maker are cranking out rounds w/ 115 grn. Hornady and SMK bullets. Barrett is making the upper along the company mentioned above (which I will not comment on), LMT is producing the bolts and carriers, and uppers too IIRC (ask MSTN) and anyone who has the skill to build an AR rifle w/ a custom barrel can go 6.8mm any time they choose. My current rifle builder is working up a price to covert one of mine at present. Mike |
