I am going to be painting a couple of bolt actions.  They both have good condition heavy matte blued, i wouldn't claim parkerized, factory finishes.  I have bought ultra flat camouflage khaki, olive, black and the recommended allpurpose grey primer.  Should I pre-heat the metal at all like you do with Gunkote?  Is the primer really needed since it is going over a good base finish matte/parkerized?  After drying for a couple hours should heat be used to cure, again like Gunkote?

No, don't heat the metal.

And don't paint the barrel, Krylon will melt if you warm it up.

Krylon is not very resistant to many solvents.  I would use it only on the furniture.

I can understand not using any heat to cure it, but to say not to paint the barrel?  Dozens of people have posted photos of painted semi and select fire guns withthe barrel painted.  I will not generate anywhetre near the heat of even a semi.

Heat the barrel!!!

It isn't to get the paint to cure quicker, thought it will probably do that as well.  If you preheat, you won't get any sags, drips or runs in the finish.  A heated barrel will dry as soon as the paint hits, which makes you able to give multiple LIGHT coats, which is how you get a decent finish.
