| I have an upper I just bought for my post ban rifle. It has a threaded barrel and a comp attached with locking compound. It wont come off with anything short of a torch. Is this legal? Do I have any alternative way of attaching a post-ban break? |
| RANT: It's a BRAKE, dammit. Even if it doesn't actually have any 'braking' effect. If you stick it in a vise and pull/hammer hard enough, you can make it into a 'break' (or broke). Rant mode off; I wouldn't worry about it, unless you are planning to use the rifle to hold up banks, etc. where the Feds might impound it and check to see how tight it (the brake) is screwed on. (I have never seen anyone at the range checking them.) You could then be liable for additional charges. If you are worried about it, you can drill a small hole thru the brake, into the outside of the barrel, 1/16 deep into the barrel is adequate, and pin it with a gas tube pin or similar. Thousands of places, weld shops and even body shops, can put a small spot of weld over the pin and hole to make you legal. |

Can I blind pin my Vortex f/s to my 14.5 myself? I obviously need the f/s permanently affixed to reach the 16" min. I live in Iowa. Sound suppressors are illegal here. But not in Neb or S. Dakota which are both a 15 minute drive. I would like to move to a suppressor friendly state in the near future. Then I would need a QD f/s to mount a suppressor. I would rather not have to buy a new barrel for this. So is it possible to remove a f/s from my 14.5 if it is "permanently affixed" with a little TLC? Silver solder: Could I reheat the barrel and remove the f/s without dammaging the barrel/chrome lining. I've done a lot of silver soldering of copper pipe in high psi refrigerant systems so my skill level to do the job is there. What's the easiest? |

Quoted: Can I blind pin my Vortex f/s to my 14.5 myself? I obviously need the f/s permanently affixed to reach the 16" min. Yes, if you've got the tools. Yes, with varying degrees of difficulty, depending on your tools, skill level and the method used to permanently attach the f/s in the first place. Silver solder: Could I reheat the barrel and remove the f/s without dammaging the barrel/chrome lining. I've done a lot of silver soldering of copper pipe in high psi refrigerant systems so my skill level to do the job is there. Yes, the solder can be remelted to remove the f/s. The heat will affect the barrel structure, although perhaps not much. To minimize this, use heat sink compound inside the bore and big gobs of it just back from the area you're heating. Remember that both a f/s and a sound suppressor are illegal on a post-ban AR, whether they're permanently attached or not. The f/s is forbidden both as a grenade launcher (if 22mm standard outer diameter) and as a flash suppressor, while the sound suppressor is forbidden as a flash suppressor, even after the threads have been neutralized by permanent attachment. |
| I think you might have missed the part that says the pin has to be 'welded over'. You would have to locate the welded over hole and drill it out (on both sides, if it is pinned across the barrel diameter) before you could 'punch it out'. Not something you would want to do every day; I don't think they (ATF) meant for it to be easy to convert, that is why they describe it as 'permenantly attached'. |

Advanced Armament Corporation makes a flash suppressor which has large external threads to accomodate a sound suppressor. I have a Vortex f/s now. I know that my Vortex will bring my 14.5" barrel out just past the federal minimum of 16". I should probably just buy the special AAC f/s and have IT permanently attatched. Then there would really be no reason to remove it when I move out of Iowa. I'm not sure if the AAC's f/s alone will bring my 14.5" past the 16" min. If not then if I want to continue with this set up then I'll have to bite the bullet and pay the $200 for a registered SBR. I'm not even sure how well the AAC f/s hides the flash. Probably not as well as the Vortex. I think I have a bit more research to do on this project. Thank you for the help. |
