Caught the AR bug now trying to educate myself and come up with some personal spec's. I'm looking for or going to mod a Colt AR-15. Want it in .308 with a 1:10 16". Did Colt ever make such a barrel? Armalite makes one. Would it be possible to drop it into a Colt AR? thanks |

Sorry to burst you bubble Sybaris1, but your newbie-ness is showing.... There is a decided difference in the magazine sizes between the AR15 and the AR10, even the bolts are different between the two. Try sticking a 308 round in a 223 magazine, you'll find IT DON"T FIT. Colt does not make 308 semi-autos, but your in luck as apparently Bushmaster has started producing their own, to compete w/ the Armalites and Knights SR25s. Is all right, no big deal we were all a [newbie] at one time..... Sorry, no bubble bursting here ......... hence the preface "trying to educate myself". So how interchangeable are the Colt AR uppers, lowers, barrels, stocks, etc.? Does a matrix exist for that? How about Colt and Armalite hybrids, much smithing required for that? How about that 6.8mm, has Colt or Armalite mentioned any future support of it? thanks |

In reguards to Colt uppers mating with other manufacturer lowers, as long as the "big-hole" issue with some older Colts is addressed, most small pivot pin Colts mate just fine with other lowers. This is a good Faq site for Colt info: [url]www.biggerhammer.net[/url], and there your will find info like this: [img]http://www.biggerhammer.net/ar15/uppers/aruppercomparison.jpg[/img] which shows differences in pivot pins, (that can be used provided you purchase an adjustable pivot pin available for proper fitting. Most Colt individual parts, barrels, sights, bolts, bolt carriers, lower parts kits mate just fine with other makers upper and lower receivers (provided pin size problem addressed) as long as your not trying to mate 223 AR15 parts with 308 AR10, BAR10 (Bushmaster 308) or SR25 parts. As to the availability of the 6.8 mm round, suggest additional reading as it appears as if this upper will require a different magazine, if threads I have read are any indication, but Wes at [b]MSTN[/b] on the Equipment Exchange can probably help you out with 6.8 mm questions.
