Typically I am a single shot freak, but lately I have been bitten by the AR-Bug. First of all I like anything that accepts "accessories", making the AR perfect. I have had my eye on the Bushmaster Varmint Special. Unfortunately the money isn't there. If I don't get started now something stupid like my mortgage or car payment will take the money (joke). I have been searching every night and have seen RRA has a decent reputation and Lone star is selling complete lowers for $209. RRA site only shows the heavy barrels in 1:8 and 1:12 twist in 24" configurations. I think I would rather have a 1:9. Will I have problems mixing other brand uppers or barrels with RRA lowers or matched upper lower kits? Is this Varmit special design flawed for mid to long range coyote/groundhog hunting and benchrest shooting?

All the major AR makers parts will generally fit together with no problem.  I just completed a RRA upper with a Bushy 11.5/5.5 Bbl, Bushy Bolt and carrier group...fit was great...shot fine.

Some uppers wont fit on RRA lowers... the RRA lowers are supposedy "in spec".... but I have had some greif with some colt and bushy uppers on RRA lowers......

That said, they are VERY popular... but for my money, I'd buy a $75 lower from www.quanticoarms.com.

And 1/8 is an EXCELLENT twist rate.... you would not be sorry with this unless you wanted to shoot REALLY light bullets a long, long way..... I shoot 45gr varmint rounds in my RRA 1/8 upper and they are super accurate.  1/9 is not fast enough for really heavy rounds.... so keep that in mind.

My local gun shop is willing to sell me the bushy mentioned complete for his cost plus tax. It looks like it will be close to the RRA price for something similar. Is the bushy any better. He keeps pushing it, but he is also a dealer for them and can provide warranty service or future repair work? If prices were equal which is better? Don't want to buy complete, but may have to wait if price is better.

If prices are equal.... Bushmaster is BEST.

Thanks for the advise, sounds like I need to save-up for the complete bushmaster varmint special.

My 16" CAR A2 RRA upper out shoots alot of Bushmaster Varmint Specials each rifle is different coming off the line really IMHO you have to pick around to find a good one no matter who its from I have seen really good accuracy from RRA though.

I have been noticing lots of parts kits from J&T, Model1 and others in $500 to $600 neighborhood minus stripped lower. Is 1/2 to 3/4 M.O.A. too much to ask from a 24" heavy varmint style flattop kit? What is better for a good line of sight on a 44mm to 50mm bell scope, EOP or flattop? Saw bushmaster includes sight blocks with varmint special, would this be more versatile for future enhancements than EOP?
