What is the difference between a drift punch and a regular punch?  What should I use when building my AR-15 and why?

Thanks,

Nate

When you build the lower there are two roll pins to be driven in, the trigger guard and bolt release, a roll pin punch works far better than any other kind of punch for that job.  You can get them from Brownells.

There are all kinds of punches, therefore there is no "regular punch." A drift punch is for moving something. It transmits the blow of the hammer to the item. They're usually large in diameter. A drift punch is nice for removing the taper pins in the front sight base.

For ARs you'll want pin punches, or roll pin punches with their small nub in their center. A starter punch is a good one to have too, it'll save broken pin punches. Then a center punch for staking of bolt carrier keys and collapsible stock lock rings.
