Newbie question...wht exactly is the forward assist for?
Manually assist movement of bolt-carrier forward in the event of a stoppage due to slight oversize ammo, dirty chamber, allowing closing of bolt so round can be fired. As long as rifle maintained correctly, proper sized ammo used, the assist will be more of a decoration.
One thing about the forward assist, you need to notice that the bolt hasn't closed before you sqeeze the trigger, otherwise you're going to make the hammer fall on an un-closed bolt requiring you to pull the charging handle back to re-set the hammer which will probably extract the bad round,if that happens to be the cause. I've been shooting ARs since '85 and have never HAD to use the forward assist.
Why would you want to force a round into a chamber? Do you pound on the bolt handle on a bolt gun to chamber a round? I won't buy an A2 or flattop upper with the assist. I stick with the old M16 or SP1 uppers just for that reason. I've never needed to use a forward assist.

I have used mine. The newer mags will sometimes have rough feedlips, or an overly-strong spring, meaning that the round can bind up the carrier while it'[s stripping out a round. Tapping the FA will push the round out, and then the action snaps shut. NEVER use it to cram in a bad round...you'll likely not get it in far enough to fire, plus you'll never get it out w/o a range rod. Regards, FastVFR800 |
