The raised fence "protects" the magazine release from accidently becoming depressed and dropping your mag out at an inconvenient moment.

I believe it also provides a "buffer" to prevent the dust cover from striking the receiver when pulling back the charging handle.

The forward extension to the raised fence also holds the spring for the push-pin type front pivot. The slab receivers can not be adapted to the standard push-pin and need the screw-in pin type. If changing uppers quick and without a screwdriver is not an issue, then this is no big deal. The other thing is that all SP1 receivers have a larger front pivot hole that will not fit any milspec upper receivers. You'll have to use only Colt SP1 upper receivers or get an offset adaptor.
I own both a raised fence receiver and an SP1 with the adapter pin. I find it a bit of a hassle having to fetch the screwdriver and dealing with having to refit the adapter pin on the next upper. On my raised fence receiver I just push the pins and instantly swap uppers, no tools needed.
If you're just using one upper with your rifle, there are no disadvantages with either.
