Hi All! A buddy of mine (yes, this is a real friend, not me doing something stupid) has just picked up a beautiful pre-ban bushy, but it's set up as a 24" fluted bbl long gun...he wants to make it look "bad" So he came to me, both because I'm into AR-15's and because I've got this reputation for being cheap (I don't know why) and he doesn't want to spend a whole lot of money. His idea: Turn his 24" "Sniper" rifle into a spittin' image of the bad-boy XM177E2 of Vietnam SpecOps fame. We've already had the "No, you have to REGISTER that lower if you make it exactly like that, because it's got an 11 1/2" bbl AND a real sound suppressor..so NO." discussion. And he doesn't really like the reliability problems I've told him about with the 11 1/2" bbl and the 5 1/2" flash suppressor. So, the option I'm pointing him toward is a 16" bbl with the "reverse flash hider" installed, so that it LOOKS like the 11 and a half/five and a half XM series rifle, without the reliability problems and with some semblance of serviceable accuracy. To the point: What's the Inner Diameter of the Reverse Flashhider? Which barrel should we use? Do we need a crush or peeler washer with it? Is there room? Is this going to look enough like the "real deal" or is the reverse flashhider obvious and cheezy? I've never seen one on a rifle that I know of, so please bear with me on the questions that appear obvious. For those who don't know...the "reverse flashhider" is actually a 6" (or so) sleeve that slides down over the 16" barrel, with a very small flash suppressor on the end...it is straight-walled with the same (apparent) cuts on the end as an XM 5 and a half inch flash suppressor...so, in the pictures, off the gun, they look pretty much the same. But, before my buddy goes shelling out money and before I start monkeying with things...I would like those more knowledgeable than I to maybe offer a little guidance. I am NOT a professional gunsmith. I'm not even a decent shade tree gunsmith. So please, short words and lots of description, because Mr. Murphy is my co-pilot. (One of these days I'm gonna crash in the mountains and eat the bastage.) Thanks in advance, Panz

Quoted: What's the Inner Diameter of the Reverse Flashhider? Which barrel should we use? As noted above, BM makes 2 versions, one for a heavy barrel and one for standard. Do we need a crush or peeler washer with it? Is there room? The slots in the slipover go all the way around, so there's no need to worry about 'timing' (unless you want the slots situated a certain way). Is this going to look enough like the "real deal" or is the reverse flashhider obvious and cheezy? I like my slipover flash hider a lot. It gives the illusion of a shorter barrel. The long portion of a 16" barrel ahead of the front sight never looked right to me. I also wanted more of CAR look, so that's why I have one. As for looking obvious, you can definitely tell the difference between a 16" w/slipover and an 11.5" w/5" FH. The slipover will still leave about 4" of exposed barrel between it and the front site. Other drawbacks: Added weight - these 5" slipovers are some of the heavier flash hiders out there. Added length - the slipover will actually add about 1.5", giving you a total barrel length of 17.5" Nonetheless, if you want more of a CAR look without the drawbacks of an 11.5" barrel, the slipover is worth considering. |
