How does the side handle interface with the bolt carrier? Anybody use one? Good, bad, ugly?
SOCOM Manufacturing makes side charging uppers for AR-15 type Rifles. The bolt needs to be slotted for the side charging to work. The upper runs for about 230 USD and an extra 20 bucks to have your bolt slotted. SOCOM MFG. Labels the Upper as part of their diamond series. I own one and enjoy its simplicity and ease of use, especially when you have a bunch of toys attached to your weapon that would normally get in the way of utilizing your charging handle.
I think fulton armory and maybe DPMS offers one. I think the main thing they are good for is competition shooting. You don't have to shift position as much in prone to charge and you have a sealed rear that doesn't blow gas in your face. I belive the main difference in the carrier is that it is threaded for the handle and it may be a little more involved to pull you bolt/carrier for cleaning.

Do they make anything else of interest? I have only heard of them in relation to these side cocking uppers, and therefore know nothing about the quality of their work. I would like to find out a little background. Also, do the companies that offer these make the charging handles fold? And do these handles reciprocate or not? |
The ASA catalog shows it being available for all three uppers; 5.56, 7.62 and 9mm. They don't show a different bolt carrier so I don't know if it works with the regular carrier or not. I had thought to use one with a 9mm. The side charger would be much more convenient if you were using mags that don't trip the bolt catch.
