| Installing the pivot pin seems to be regarded as a major PITA. I've got an even worse problem -- I've decided to use the parts from an old receiver to build the new one, and so would like to remove the pivot pin. Any suggestions on how to do this? |

I bought the "special" pivot pin removal tool for a couple of bucks, and when it arrived I kicked myself because it's just a common allen wrench that has had the last half inch or so of its short length ground down into a wedge/ramp. The wrench size is perhaps 1/16, or whatever matches the depth of the pin channel. Grind away the material (one cut, leaving longest remaining edge on the OUTSIDE of the wrench's right angle) so that you've got a wedge (maybe 20 or 30 degrees) that you can use to compress the little retaining pin down into it's hole. Then you just rotate the takedown pin so that the channel is out of line from the retaining pin, and slide the works out -- being sure to keep the little retaining pin from launching. A picture is worth a thousand words. Perhaps somebody can take a picture of one for you and post it here. If you can't get one made yourself, the tool is available from Brownells. |
| I believe all pivot pins have a small hole at the end, where the detent pin stops the pivot pin from being pulled out, and all receivers have a drilled through hole at the right side. Insert a small metal pin (the smallest allen wrench you can find) through the opening in the receiver and push this detent pin down while rotating the pivot pin. You only need to rotate it 1 degree or so just to get the detent pin out of its channel. No special tool needed. At least this is how it works in my Colt lower. |
