| I just bought an A2 stock to replace the non-collapsible M4 stock that came with my rifle. So how to do I get that one off and put the new one on? Do I really need one of those fancy wrenches? |

Yes, they do make a tool for removal, but if you have a small punch and a small ball-peen hammer, you can tap the ring off without damaging the the little holes on old models or slots on the newer ones, (righty tighty-lefty loosey), once it moves a little it gets loose and you can unscrew it w/ your fingers. I have used this method a long time, even a screwdriver with edge in hole/slot will tap the old one off. Watch out for the take-down detent spring which is under the aluminum keyed piece between lower and the locking ring, after ring is loosen hold pressure w/ off hand until you can move keyed piece back slowly (spring can shoot out or worse get bent). Re-installation screw in buffer tube till it captures the buffer spring detent/retaining pin and spring, place take-down retaining spring in hole slide keyed aluminum down straight and hold compress'd till ya get the lockin ring up snug, tighten w/ small punch and hammer. Torque for this is 30-40 lbs, which I never worry about that much, just make it tight. I did buy one of those wrench thingys the last gun show I went to, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Sometimes people use locktite on these ringnuts (I use the blue). If they used the blue (medium strength) the ring should not be too hard to loosen, but if they used the red then its tough. I have had to really clamp down on these rings sometimes to get them to budge. I used channel locks and was just barely able to get it to move. Sometimes even heat with a pin tourch is required. Be careful and try not to crush the extention tube if you intend to use the stock again sometime. Don't be particulaly afraid of damaging the lock ring/nut. They are very inexpensive to replace. Good luck |

Well... it came off. I ended up unscrewing the tube first... the key stripped off three rows of threads, oh well. I hate non-collapsibles anyway. And yet, I STILL CAN'T GET THE RING OFF! IT WON'T GO IN EITHER DIRECTION! The A2 is on, and it looks nice. Screw the carbine stock. Project complete! |
