What all do you have to take off to mount a free float tube.  I know the front sight and gas tube, and know how to do that.  What about the barrel nut and all the delta parts?  Do you simply unscrew the barrel nut and take everything off via the muzzle or do you actually have to seperate the barrel from the upper?

I'm pretty sure I know how to put everything new back on.

Thanks.

I tried to do this myself. The next day I gave my gunsmith a bag of parts. Let him put it back together. Hope you have better luck

1.  Remove your standard, 2-piece, split handguards.
2.  Remove the muzzle device if installed.  You may be screwed here because if you have a post-ban barrel with a welded / pinned muzzle brake, you will not be able to easily remove it without major surgery requiring special tools and equipment.  This step is required if you want to move to steps #3 and #4.
3.  Using a pin punch, drive out the 2 tapered pins that hold the front sight base in place.  Drive them in the direction toward the larger diameter end of the pin.  Otherwise you will never get them out.
4.  Slide the sight base and gas tube assembly off the barrel.
5.  With the barrel or upper receiver clamped securly in a vise with the CORRECT holding tool, unscrew the barrel nut from the upper receiver with the CORRECT tool.  It is turned counter-clockwise as viewed from the muzzle looking toward the rear of the receiver.
6.  Slide the barrel nut and delta ring assy off the barrel and set aside.  You will not use them again.
7.  Lube the receiver threads with a very small amount of moly grease or anti-sieze.
8.  Slide your new floating tube or it's separate nut onto the barrel and receiver threads.  Tighten to a minimum of 35 lb-ft of torque.  Repeat this several times.  If the tube hole lines up with the receiver on the last try and you can re-insert your gas tube with NO binding in the hole, then go to the next step.  If the hole does not lie up, then continue to tighten the barrel nut until the next hole lines up.  You can verify hole alignment by attempting to slip a .177" drill into the upper receiver as an alignment gage.  If it fits you are good to go.  If not, tighten or loosen very slightly until the drill gage fits.  Remove gage.
9.  If your tube is a 2-piece unit, screw on and tighten piece #2 (the tube itself).
10.  Re-install sight base with the tapered pins.  Make sure you insert the skinny end of the pin into the fat hole in the sight base first.  Tap them snuggly into final position.
11. Reinstall your muzzle device & you are done.

Good luck.
