Other than the built in IR illuminator and the visual and IR lasers are co-aligned what is the difference between the DBAL I2 and A3? I have a Surefire light with the vampire head so I could use that for my IR illuminator. Are the lasers being co-aligned the only other difference between them?

The current DBAL-i2 has one side of the laser visible and the other side IR. Each is zeroed is separate from the other.

There is a new DBAL-i2 that is coming out that replaces the visible laser with an IR illuminator.

The DBAL-a3 has the slaved laser plus the IR illuminator, with the slaved laser making zeroing really simple when changing between different rifles. Just align the vis laser with your dayscope zero and you will be very close to on target.

I used to use a CQBL and a surefire with vamp head but you realize that it is almost mandatory to have the laser and illum activate at the same time on one switch.

I think TNVC has the IR only DBAL-I2 on their site already: http://tnvc.com/shop/steiner-dbal-i%C2%B2-class-1-3r-ir-single-spectrum-laser/. Is that it?

I believe that is for pre-order, with shipping expected in the next few weeks. The new i2 is IR illum/IR laser...which is pretty much perfect for 99% of night-time use. The vis laser on the a3 will come in handy for swapping between rifles.

i2 is good for a dedicated laser on a rifle
a3 is good for quick swapping onto different rifles

I think it's worth noting that if you over lap your IR laser zero onto your weapon zero then the two will cross planes and past that point the laser will be off.

very true. That's why many people advocate for the offset method
