For those of you that have push button tailcaps on your lights... If you are right handed are you mounting the light on the left side of the rail (where you place your support hand) or are you mounting it on the right side of the rail (opposite side of your support hand)?
Depends on alot of factors, a very important one being the mount. I am right handed and have a mount that puts the light around 1 o'clock. I can give the button an over the top reach around with my left thumb using less than a quarter of an inch movement. This pretty much eliminates accidental activation. As others here have said, YMMV.
I have tried many different mounts and positions over the years and for me, using a vert grip with the gear sector light mount on the left (support) side at 11 o clock works best. I use a monkey (thumb forward grip) so the tail cap is right there with essentially no movement. This mount is very low profile as well.
Cheap, ambidextrous (important), and no cheese grater required. http://www.elzetta.com/zfh1500FAQ.htm

Right handed and right side mount. With the light on the same side as my head/face/eyes, the barrel would be bright when the light was on, and degrade my night vision. With the light opposite the the side my face is on, my eyesight is degraded less by the barrel shielding or acting as a curtain the light beam itself. I can see where the light is pointed, not the light blasting the end of the rifle barrel.

6 o'clock is the worst place for me especially since I like to shoot off stuff like packs, tables, rocks, etc.. I rest my gun exactly where that elzetta mount would be. Quoted:

I rarely shoot a carbine off a rest and the six o'clock light position is great for shooting around barricades, and is ambidextrous. The ultimate light position would probably be directly in front of the front sight, at 12 o'clock. For me though, the Elzetta mount with a good Surefire is nearing perfection. Cost effective too. |
