I've been looking at lights for a few days and need some advice. I live in the country and want a light that is going to be bright enough with enough throw to be used at 100 yards but can also be used in the house if needed. Outside use is my first priory with in house use second. I was looking at the trl-1 in 300 lumin but I don't know if that will work at 100yds. Any thoughts?

Surefire P2X Fury EAG model 500 lumens is what you want for 100 yard range sir.

This light has excellent throw with a wide hot spot to double up as a cqb and outdoor use, and it's only 130$ bucks shipped. The mount I recommend for you is the Vicking tactics light mount which is like 25 bucks.

Battery life is around 1.5 hours with standard cr123a and close to 2 hours with lithiums like Surefire batteries.

Great light but meant for pistols in my opinion cause the ergonomics are weird on a rifle for me. I like a push tailcap for light activation on my rifles/carbines. YMMV.

A TLR-1 or X-300 at the 12 oclock position isn't as awkward as you might think.
The HL might be a bit big for that location though...

I agree at 12 o'clock is the best place for the TLR/X300 type light, but any were else its just awkward.

Very wide spill and no blinding effect indoors at 10 feet of white walls.

Surefire got it right the the P2X Fury 500 lumen models.

ETA: The set up is a BCM EAG carbine clone I put together.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'm not a big fan of the push for momentary, push harder for constant on caps. I feel like if I ever use it under stress it would be easy to push it all the way for constant. In my head I think something like the trl on the right rail and forward grip under it could be operated with my thumb. Then I would be able to have momentary and constant. I just don't know what light would have those features and work QCB/100 yds. Momentary only will be ok to, if I had to settle on something.

Surefire x300u then which is 500 lumens and very similar to the EAG Fury I have.

ETA: The toggle switch on the tlr/x300 type lights seem harder to activate under stress vs a clickie tailcap imo. YMMV.

Well,

For distance I can say the tlr-1 HP is the way to go...

200meters without an issue...

I do agree that the tail cap on the tlr series isn't great...but I use a remote tape switch in a magpul illumination kit...

I've run over 200 meters and easily pick out a possum or coyote with no moonlight or ambient light...I live on a farm...

So, for distance I'd go with the hp even tho it has less lumens than the x300 ultra I actually sold mine after using the hp...

It also pairs perfect with an acog..

+1 the hp has a tighter hot spot and was made to throw.

Ok, so I was reading the post on the Fury EAG and noticed there is what seems to me the same light but with push momentary/twist constant, is that correct? If so I think that is the light for me. I just want to make sure everything else is the same between the two.

Ok,

Since I'm usually lazy about pics and such...

I'll reuse on I already had up...

It's a bad pic but shows the hp on a 16" m4 Psa madness upper...

The tape switch is on the other side of the weapon...

Yes, this gun has now been upgraded to a weapon, and isn't on my wall of shame anymore and in in my master suite...

Bret

P.s.

Here is a close pic of the light on a cdp blam mount at 6:00

I love lights at 6:00 they just feel right and allow good use of the manual switch in the event you need it on steady...

Wrong the EAG Fury is push for momentary and click for constant on. There is no twist function with the EAG Fury.

Sorry I didn't word it right. What I meant was that I just noticed the regular fury tactical has the push/twist tail cap and it also has just the high setting. So other than the tail caps they are the same light right?

They are the same with one difference, and that is the EAG model has been issued a different part number for use on a weapon light.

The P2X Fury tactical part number from surefire is just a regular handheld.

ETA: So which light are you getting?

I'm torn between the Fury with the twist cap and the tlr-1 300 lumen.  The Fury w/twist I think will suite my needs better but isn't rated for weapon use even though people put them on there ar's without problems. The tlr is rated as a weapon light but I'm not convinced it has the reach I need. If someone can confirm the tlr 300 lumen can reach at least 75 yards then  I would jump all over it, otherwise I think I'm going with the Fury.

I'm about to buy a Fury to try out for extra distance,  but to answer your question...

What is the light going on?  I have a couple TLR1s.  No HP or HL.  I live in the woods, so I'm sure being extra dark really helps the light out.  If there was ambient light other than the moon your results may vary.

With an optic, I have no trouble with squirrel size targets at 100 yards.

With irons/red dot I have no trouble with dog sized targets at 100.

I have a TLR on a 226 and one on a carbine that have been great.

Just went outside to try and get a pic, but it didn't come out great.  The far group of trees is 100 meters.   The light works better than the picture shows.  This is in my 226.

The light will be going on a 16" ar. I'm not necessarily using it for hunting, I just see the rifle/light being used more outside than inside. I have a 870 with a light I would prefer in the house. If you can see a dog at 100 then sounds like the tlr throws farther than I thought. Is your the new 300 lumen or the older one?

If it's a newer one than it could be 300. Older ones where like 160 or something. My local shop still has the older ones on the self.

That or a 600 Scout, which share the KX2C head. The optic's throw is what you want, and it still provides plenty of spill to see peripherally indoors.

Well,

Bagged me self a yote!

About midnight local time...

Third story master bathroom window...right near my 200 meter backstop...so I'd say over the ground about 185meters...from about 40' height...

Nice shot too...right across my pond...

Although I only got one...and it cost me three shells

I'm not sure how much the downward changes the sight line...to where it was...it's probably 75' height difference...

I shot...and think I missed the first one...they are never sure where the shot comes from the first round...

Next shot...placed it right on top the head...just about facing me perfect...right above those two eyes starring back...

Bingo, dropped it like a bad habit...

Last shot was just to hear the gun go bang again...they were a running by this time...and the clear shot over the pond is only a small window...there are a few rows of pine trees for wind break on both sides and to add...they ran smack right into my western orchard too...so, no more picking them out...

At least there is one less...

Also this year I've been seeing lots of opossum too...ugly damn things!

Bret

Oh, forgot...this was with the rifle I posted earlier with the trijicon acog and the streamlight hp light...

Been busy at work.  Got my fury in.  It is definitely brighter than the TLR, but not by as much as I had hoped.

I'll work on pics later on, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another for a rifle.  It should be good to go at 200 yards for dog sized animals with open sights.

Just get one.  I may buy one to keep in my truck now.

Thanks for all the great info guys.  I stopped by an indoor shooting range yesterday and looked at a few of the lights there. They where sold out of the Fury but had the older trl-1. The sales guy said they should have the Fury back in about a week so I can look at both side by side. Looking at a light inside a building with bright florescent lighting isn't the best way to tell but at lest I can get my hands on them.

4truck I'm looking forward to your pics and evaluation of the two lights in the hay fields.

Conditions were similar to the other night.  Haven't made it out in the open yet, but these were in the same spot as the last pictures.

The pictures suck, but the fury is noticeably brighter and has a much farther throw.  Side by side it wins hands down.  Initially it didn't seem that much brighter, but after playing with it I was incorrect initially.

Farthest trees you can see are about 125 yards.

I am glad you saw the light with the Fury, and the TLR did not do that bad as well for 125 yards but for 300 lumens I thought it would do better with the first 30 yards.

I didn't get a chance to see it til last night, been working a lot. I've been checking the forum with my phone mostly and the vids did't show up on it. Nice video of the two lights.

I'm "going into town"  today, see if I can put my hands on one. I would rather buy from a store than order one.
