| We went on a small annual armadillo hunt and one of the tightest longest throwing lightsout there was the polytac led hp. While its flood after 18 yards left something to be desired it was its tight beam throw that was out distancing some very expensive lights....vey interesting when you consider you can buy one for $39 and on;y at 150 lumens. My question, for a hunting/far spotter: what are some of the best lights out there in terms of massive throw that are weapon mounted? |
| Actually walked it off, good illumination at the base of the tree to see the body of an armadillo at 112 yards. It is like many others capable of throwing light much further but it illuminated the target where the Fury at 500 lumens couldnt and the 600 lumen Streamlight could not as well. But like I said the flood leaves something to be desired, but definitely not the throw. It also out threw my Malkoff m10 in my 961and my 952v Surefires. I will be buying one shortly, I saw some new ones on Ebay for $40 shipped. I was illuminating a tree at 125 yards. I dont know how it would compare to say a Jetbeam RRT-1or a M1X as far as that goes but in all the people with expensive light trying to reach the vermin, we counldnt touch the Polytac led hp. I still prefer my Surefire with Malkoff M10 with great flood and throw for SD but I will have one of these for hunting for sure. I will buy two and put a QD mount on it just for hunting, I like the fact it runs for three hours and is waterproof. One black and one yellow. Not much on the spill/flood but a really good thrower. it will be my pig/armadillo/jackrabbit/nutria/coyote light for sure. |

My question, for a hunting/far spotter: what are some of the best lights out there in terms of massive throw that are weapon mounted? +1 pretty much reminds me of a G2led The newer Led head for the surfire E2D has a long throw and is 200Lumen XRE/ Smallest LED of those I'll list has the highest surface temp so with a average drop-in reflector it pushes out to 250+yards and will still ID stuff I have a bluish tint Cree XRE R2 at about 220 lumens that reaches out to 225-250 yards. An Ohlight M20 Warrior early model uses this LED with a slightly larger reflector for around 250-300-yard reach at 12,000 Lux. Most of the later higher output LEDs will put out around 5-7,000 lux in a P6 sized host so they really can't reach out for the distance. Stay away from multi mode drop-ins for lights mounted directly to firearm. I have tried all these with a couple PLS-1 mounts and none went poof when I pulled the trigger. The two I use are the Olight Warrior M20 R2 and the Cree XRE high output drop-in in a Solarforce L2m host. MCE- I have a 3mode that I am able to run off a single 16340 putting out an estimated 350 lumens with a frosted lens It lights up a whole room at 180degree coverage. Only runs for 20 minutes on one cell, 60 minutes on the lower setting which I estimate is around 100 lumens. Lots of artifacts if used with clear lens. In the dark of night the strobe is really obnoxious with a clear lens. P7-I have a 3 mode that is direct drive it puts out more light than the MCE or at least a beam with less artifacts and a huge hotspot. Has a wall of light effect but not that high lux from a P6 style host. Higher quality beam and better initial output than the MCE. It drops off as the cell loses voltage and gets well over an hour on an 18650. The surface area of the LED and dome is greater than the MCE as well which seems to make it a floodier hotspot beam overall compared to the MCE XPG-current Malkoff LED in M61 265 lumens from two 16340s or a single 18650. I have two XPG 2C maglite drop-ins. Both put out huge amount of spill for close up but they really excel as a spotlight as they can reach out 3 times as far as the same LED in a P6 host. The High Color Rendition Index HCRI one probably puts out 200 or less lumens but helps in seeing detail and actually spotting what you are looking for outside. It probably has less lux than the cooler tint one but makes up for it in what you can actually see better due to it’s tint. As far as mounting it in a carbine a layer or two of bicycle inner tube would make it fit in a pair of 34mm scope rings if you get the C cell size. XML-Using 18650 and enough current you can get 1000 lumens. One custom drop-in hits 1300 lumens direct drive. Big hotspot it does not push light so well. Needs huge collector to project light the same distance as a XRE. The Polytac does have great switch feel but they don’t say it can use rechargeables of any kind. If you compare LEDs to a incan you have to do it at night. The tint of the incan will make it look like it has more relative output in daylight compared to a LED. |
