I'm guessing it is a preference thing, but is it recommended by the experts to mount your light on the left side if you are right handed and activate button with left thumb?

That, top mount or remote switch on the top rail are the state of the art at this time.

I run all mine mounted on the right side and use pressure pads on the top to activate them.

Yes there is no right or wrong side. I actually prefer a 6 o'clock mount. Works for left or right hand shooters. I use the ElZetta  1500 light mount on most of my rifles.

Top mount > bottom mount > side mount

Side mounting is least desirable because it may be on the wrong side if shooting around a corner.  Bottom mounting is better because it eliminates the wrong-side problem, but still has a potential problem when shooting over a barricade, as the barricade may block the light.  Top mounting is best because it eliminates the wrong-side problem and it eliminates the problem with shooting over a barricade.  You need a light that's not very tall though, or it may block your view through a scope.
