Alright, so I've ordered a SureFire G2 LED to mount on my AR. I have some questions though 1) How important is getting a shock-isolated bezel like the surefire Z32? Looking at the pictures, it doesn't seem like many use one, but I don't wanna rely on that. Is the Z32 shock isolated bezel a must have? Just a good idea? Or is it not really needed? 2) What about the Z59 Click-On tailcap? I am trying to minimize the footprint on the rail by pushing it as far forward as possible, however with the twist on cap this is not possible. With a Z59 click-on cap it seems like I would be able to mount the light further forward in the mount, since I would not need to be able to twist to retain function. However, can the batteries still be accessed by removing the front bezel when mounted this way? Good idea? |

There are two versions of the G2L
The original, now superseded version featuring the P60L LED Lamp Assembly in a bezel. The current version featuring the KX4 dedicated LED bezel. The KX4 is a dedicated LED bezel that cannot [is not intended to] be disassembled. For identification the KX4 is clearly laser-etched as such and has a window retaining ring with lots of raised 'pips'. If you have the old version of the G2L (with the removable P60L) then you do not need a shock isolated bezel (such as the Z32). In fact you'll get lower output and longer runtime from a P60L in a Z32 because the heat generated by the LED can not transfer effectively to the bezel where it can be dissipated. The P60L has thermal protection that throttles back the power to the LED to reduce it's output when it senses it is getting too hot. It will establish a 'safe' output level and regulate to that as long as it can until the battery juice runs out. This 'thermal regulation' happens in all bezels but more quickly in shock isolated ones. The safe output will also be lower. LEDs do not require additional shock isolation like incandescent bulbs do in order to survive life on a firearm. If you have the current version of the G2L (KX4) then the Z32 is of no use, and wouldn't be necessary even if it was. Edit: Both versions of the G2L can have their batteries replaced by removing the bezel. I hope this helps? Al :) |

Quoted: Very helpful! I think it will be the new version of the G2L, but will not know for sure until it arrives. But its new stock, so very likely to be the current version. There are two versions of the G2L The original, now superseded version featuring the P60L LED Lamp Assembly in a bezel. Good, I can scratch that off the list. Also, sounds like a Z59 would be useful in allowing me to mount the light further forward in the mount. That will be useful, as I am trying to minimize the footprint on the rail, since I am using a carbine rail and trying to get away from using a VFG. Thanx... |
