There are a few factors to consider. One is the bezel, shock isolated is preferrable on a weapon light. It simply means that the batteries are not in direct contact with the bezel and they will not bang into the lamp on recoil, which will reduce reliability. Second is light output, too dim and it won't be effective at lighting a room, too bright and the splash from it hitting a wall will blind you. I find that around 80-100 lumens for an indoor light is more than adequate, any brighter and it won't really help indoors. As far as reliable lights go, surefire and insight technologies make outstanding lights for high prices, I'm not saying they aren't worth it, but you will pay for the quality. On the cheaper side, the surefire g2 can be made into a very effective combat light with a cheap bulb upgrade (malkoff rocks) and a tailcap pressure switch. The pelican m6 is also a good lower cost light and there is an oem mounting kit complete with rail, ring, and pressure switch. Pentagonlight also made some very nice lights. The company was sued out of business in 2008 by surefire, so their lights are fairly cheap now days, and surefire replacement parts and upgrades will work in many models, so you can keep it running for years to come.

ETA check out 4sevens dot com and lighthound dot com, they have many good light brands, and are a good place to get an idea of what's out there.
