Hey guys, I like the advantages that a rifle mounted light offers but I dislike rails and all kinds of ninja stuff and I've been looking for a simple setup.

I'm thinking about getting a set of Magpul MOE handguards and mount a rail at the 2 o'clock position.

I'm looking at either the Surefire G2 LED or the Surefire 6P, not sure which.

I'm also looking at adding a Pelican tape switch, is this a good piece or is there something better?

Also, what ring should I use to mount it? The VTAC looks good except it's offset, I'll use it if I have to but I'd prefer a ring that is not offset.

Thanks.

MI front sight base mount $30
Vltor light mount $30 (1" Weaver scope rings work too)
Surefire G2 LED $65 (6P Defender pictured)

Wow.

That setup is pretty cool too.

Any info on the tape switch?

I am not a fan of tape switches.

No matter what I did with my tape switch I could not get it to stay on my rifle in the Iraqi heat. Here is my friend holding his M4 as an example. See the tape switch?

Similar to 87GN's setup: Ultimate Arms front sight rail, SureFire G2L, 1" scope ring...

As shown, the light is at 10 o'clock. This puts it in a good position for thumb activation. If you put it on the other side at 2 o'clock, you're going to have to use the pressure switch.

This is assuming: a) you're right handed, and b) you're not using a vertical foregrip (you didn't mention one).

If you're using a VFG, I don't think you're going to get the light into a position where you can press the tailcap button using this mount setup.

Correct.

I am right handed and am not using a VFG.

I'm thinking 10 o'clock is ideal as it won't interfere with my side mounted sling.

And, I used an 870 with a light many years ago at the range and it used a pressure pad. I think it was one of those Tacstar lights.

But, I've liked the tape switch/pressure pad thing since.

Same mount as the other two except with a Scout Light on it.  Stay away from the tape switches - they suck.

Sorry to play 20 questions.

But why do they suck?

If you have something like an 870 forend where the switch is built in, fine.

If not, the tape switch is liable to come loose.

And with the advent of new and improved shooting positions/hand locations, effective tape switch use isn't really viable.

Tape switches are more prone to accidental discharge, more likely to become damaged or wear out, and, to me, do not offer any more utility.  I dont like having stinky bicycle inner tube on my forearm to hold it in place.

What rail did you use?  Does it require permanent modification to your handguards?

No modification. It's a Midwest Industries short rail panel that bolts to the handguard through the holes. Just have to take the handguards off.

The examples I mentioned are pretty much what are in this thread, and will do you much better than the tubesock-type method you were thinking of earlier. These lock the lights in place so that they will not be shifting in orbit around your handguard.

For those with standard handguards wishing to mount a Light, our Elzetta ZFH1500 is a popular option.
It provides an inexpensive way to mount a Light to your gun without the need for a rail system.  It is light weight, durable, ambidextrous, and adds no width to the weapon allowing storage in most gun racks and cases.  Thumb Screw models allow rapid installation and removal of flashlights without tools.

Does the Midwest Industries short rail panel compensate for the slope of the handguard?

No, but the angle is so slight, the spot of the light still winds up pointing at my point of aim. IMO, it's a non-issue.
