I'm thinking about purchasing the Surefire M962 KIT1.  Is this a good general purpose light for an AR?

If you include use with NVD as general purpose, the 96x is an excellent weapon light.

If not, you might be better served with an M600C Scout Light.

Are they not fine without the filter?

The growing opinion is that modern LED WeaponLights such as the M600C and X300 produce beams of sufficient strength to negate the need for three-SF123A incandescent models when IR light is not a requirements. The M600C is far smaller (shorter, thinner, much less bulky) and far more light-weight.

I own an M962 and have had excellent luck with it. That being said, there is currently no viable LED option for the M962-so you are stuck with lousy battery runtime and incandescent bulbs that burn out.

A few years ago, the M962 was the cat's meow-but they have simply been eclipsed by newer technology. I am patiently awaiting for Surefire (or someone) to release an LED retrofit kit for mine.

On the plus side, the M962 is built like a damned tank. Here's mine:

ETA: It also has an excellent beam

What is a good price on a new 600C?

I just picked up a M600C in Desert Sand Brown for $325.00 and am very happy with it. The Scout light is better than my M962 in every way. I do not need the IR feature so the LED fits my needs fine.
As mentioned above, Brightflashlights is the way to go, he got me a great price on my M962XM07 and my M900A.
