Literally. I was sitting on the couch watching some TV tonight when I hear a loud pop on my left side. The lights were off, but I could still see smoke in by the light from the TV. At first I thought a round went off in my spare mag. Then I realized I didn't have my mag carrier on anymore.

I sit up and realize this has happened.

The bulb blew out, and so did the lense. I'm not sure if something shorted in the batteries, or the light went on and I just didn't notice the heat. Either way, it made for an exciting evening.

Srry, crappy camera.

This is why you spend the extra little bit of money and use Surefire CR123A's.

Titanium Batts?

Looks like mismatched voltage in those cells.  Titaniums have a good reputation, but bad cells do slip through.

Those look to be the older style cells.

Personally, I use SF, Streamlight or Panasonics, all made in USA.

Every surefire I have ever been issued or used, and all that I have seen out here in Iraq, are pieces of shit, and will break, burn out, or blow up, without anything wrong done by the owner.

So 3 guys say it's the batteries and you say it's the cheap ass light?

Encouraging someone to side with the lower bidder is not a "fix". Do you think that a pelican light would have responded differently to an internal explosion? I doubt it. Why not just use the proper batteries for the application? I.E. Surefire.

Then your experience is unique to your person. Surefire has a VERY strong following comprised of people who look at flashlights like we look at AR's. THey are a quality brand. This is not to say they don't make a lemon now and then, but their lemons are few and far between and the OP's issue was one of batteries, not the light.

I have had some 123s vent but not explode.  They were Chineese.  No more Chineese made batts for me either.

Personally, I think its operator error.

There, skewed your statistics.

This is an issue of using poor quality or mismatched batteries not of the flashlight. CPF members have shown this can happen with a variety of flashlight including a Pelican PM6.

It's not about which flashlight brand you use - it's about using American-made CR123A batteries from a reliable retailer whether they are SureFire SF123A or others.

Had this happen w/ a cabelas 12v.  One of the cr123s apparently blew and took the other three as well as the bulb w/ it...  the day after I bought it.  Crazy shit like that is why I don't keep a battery in my NV a lot of the time, but that wouldn't make much sense for a flashlight.

This is why I no longer use batteries marked "PRC".

Glad you weren't hurt.
