My work rifle has the light mounted on the right side of the fore grip and I have seen this on many peoples rifles. Is there a benefit to this? Any issues with mounting the light below the fore grip or does it come down to user preference?

I've always thought preference. My current light mounts "inline" under the barrel, with MY thought being when moving around a corner, etc. I don't have to worry about the light being on a different horizontal axis than the barrel. That is, try and ID a target when pieing a corner, only to have the light still behind the wall if it's offset mounted.

That said, with it mounted below you run into issue when working behind horizontal cover.

I figure corners are more likely than short barricades for home defense in the unlikely event I am using my AR inside for defense of the home.

As always, YMMV.

I have run lights in all positions and the pieing a corner thing is totally theoretical and is not an issue.  You are just as likely to not get your barrel around the corner and not get the light if its side mounted... if you often shoot side barricades instead of a target because you keep your barrel within an inch of the door frame perhaps you dont want side mounted.  You do occasionally have an issue with shooting over barriers or on flat rests being more difficult.  I actually shoot prone some... bottom mounted lights suck when using an improvised rests in the prone.

Both of the above posts make sense. I have a Surefire M900 mounted on my duty rifle and have never had a problem with horizontal barricades. I just make sure the vertical grip is at the leading edge of the barricade.
