Does anyone think these little pistol lights are good on an AR15?
Also a new (light only) from insight called XT1
Or any others like these?

They are very good on an AR.  I would recommend the TLR1 over any M3 simply because of the LED bulb.

<----Huge fan of the TLR1 on just about ANY firearm

The rated 80 lumens seems to be much less than what it really produces - compares favorably with some of the latest-generation Cree LEDs.

4 more ??

1)Can a TLR1 get a bulb upgrade?
2)has anyone done it on a rifle mounted TLR1 or 2 ?
3)were you happy with the result?
4)or spring another $80 and get an x300?

The original 3 watt Luxeon LED could be swapped for a newer-generation LED, but not without a few headaches. Most CREE LEDs use a package that doesn't focus well when used as a Luxeon substitute. OTOH, most of the similar Seoul Semiconductor LEDs focus OK, but have a mounting base that must be electrically isolated from the heat sink (requires an insulator). In all cases, the LED is soldered to the circuit, so this wouldn't be a simple screw-in modification.

Innerds of a factory-stock TLR1:

I have TLR1 mounts for several rifles (a couple of AKs and an AR15) - It works VERY well on a rifle.

I've done side-by-side night time outdoor comparisons between the TLR1 and a 235 lumen Fenix TK10: There really isn't a whole lot of brightness difference between them, either in flood or throw - Certainly not enough to justify the trouble of upgrading the TLR1's LED. As previously mentioned, the TLR1's 80 lumen spec seems to be WAY underrated.

SUGGESTION: Try one for yourself - They aren't particularly expensive, and if you aren't satisfied with the results, you can probably sell it for pretty close to what you paid for it.

I would love to find a source who could swap an IR LED into the TLR1.

ETA: Assuming there is a high output IR LED that is available.
