I have a few Surefire weapon lights and I am trying to figure out which one would be the best for my Sig 556's or M4geries. Right now, I have the X200 LED on my 556 HD because it already had the P adapter on it and I didn't feel like converting my other ones. I was also told the X200 LED would be a better choice than the X300 in terms of range. This seemed strange to me, but is it true?

Which one for a carbine-X200 LED or X300?

My X200 is the B model so I can't compare the range, but I'm impressed with the tight and very bright beam of the X300 I recently bought.  I would feel very comfortable with it on a CQB carbine.

Strange, no idea. All 3 of my weapon lights are X200's but I bought them before the 300 was out, one would assume the 300 is a newer version.

X200A Tightly focused 60 lumens
X200B Widely focused 100 lumens
X300 Focused somewhere in between the 2, 110 lumes.

The 200A may give you more range than the X300. But LED's generally don't project light as far as regular bulbs, due to the wavelenght of the light.

The X300 is truly impressive.

Which X200 do you have?  There's an A and a B, and they're exact opposites of each other.  The X200A has a very narrow beam and puts all of it's output into a very small area.  It is all throw (range) and no spill (flood).  The X200B has a very broad beam, with all spill and very limited throw.
I haven't played with one yet, but my understanding is that the X300 is a combination of these beam types.  It uses newer LED technology so it also has more output and runtime than the X200's.  For any kind of rifle, I would go with an X300.

To mine eyes the X300 beats the X200A in terms of throw - the beam is larger and brighter.

I like the X200B for handguns used indoors.

X300 for Carbines.
