Are the handguards on the M500A roughly the same size as the standard AR15 handguards?

They are based on Colt style M4 handguards. Double shielded (which is good for the electronics).

Nope, like Jack stated, they are fatter like M4 handguards.

Will the same m500 fit colt style triangular handguard caps as well as bushmaster round caps?

Thats a good question. I think the answer is no, but I would want to check with Surefire before taking my word. If the answer happens to be no, changing handguard caps is usually pretty easy.

The flange at the front end is circular, so I don't think it would fit the triangular cap very well.  I can post a picture later, but I can't upload it while I am at work.

No.
M500A = M4/Carbine
M510A = AR15 M16 (Rifle length)
M511A = Triangular Handguard Cap.
