I'm a law enforcement officer and would like to get some decent night vision gear. My experiences with NV is SEVERELY limited. I've played with some Generation 1 items, and once borrow a pair from another agency (however do not know if it was generation 2 or 3). My agency is a small one, and isn't likely to be getting any in the forseable future. What are the main differences between Gen 2 and Gen 3? Are the financial differences between them great enough to go with Gen 3? From looking at the ones I have seen online, I think I would like to go with a head mounted set (but would like opinions/comments on those type of systems). Also, best brands/models/places to buy. Any help from someone who knows more than me would be appreciated. |

I run a PVS 14. I've been extremely happy with it. It's 3rd gen monocular and I use it primarily with helmet mount and a weapon mount. Pricing on mine was about $3000. But something you may not have considered is that 3rd gen night vision is available to LE agencies via grants and programs. The dept. in my city got a PVS 14 and PVS 7B both in that manner. Actually, there's a thread on 1911 forums that started out with my getting bashed pretty badly for some of my equipment. I'll send you the link in private messages as it does actually turn around into a pretty decent thread. It might help you out some. |

The PVS 14 is definately top notch. With NV, you get what you pay for. The difference in price between Gen II and Gen III is directly proportional to the quality of vision. Once you use Gen III you will goff at anything less than. Although I have no NV devices at this time, I am planning to in the near future. I have done quite a bit of research on the subject and have decided on the PVS 14 when the time is right. It can be head mounted or put in front of an Aimpoint red dot. You can do a search for NV on the web and will be suprised to find how much info is available. |
