Some time ago I experimented w/the Rhino enlarged magwell. I like the idea of easier/faster mag insertion but didn't want to pay the $$$ for a special lower or the Lancer add-on aluminum enlarged magwell, so the $20 Rhino seemed like an inexpensive experiment.
Pros: Inexpensive, easy to attach, makes mag insertion stupid-easy, even w/your eyes closed.
Cons: Won't seat all mags (ie: that have an over-insertion ridge), too large for what it does, being too large makes it difficult to smoothly insert a mag unless you're holding the mag body near the bottom, and it prevents pivoting the upper on the forward pin as far as usual.
In the end I gave up on it and I don't regret the experiment (that's how we learn things and not all experiments turn out the way we'd like, right?)
Fast-forward a goodly number of months and I see one of Stickman's pics in another thread, and it's sporting a Rhino magwell (???). I IM'd Stickman for his impressions and he mentioned the Rhino as-is was too large for his taste as well, and fixed that buy cutting off some of the lower part of the Rhino (duh! shoulda thought of that myself!).
So, dusted off a Rhino from the parts bin, had my local 'smith machine off part of the bottom and gave it another shot.
Results: Mag insertion is still very easy, especially when under stress, hand position on inserted mag no longer as critical (no hindrance to date even after a couple of classes), doesn't look like a Dyson attachment on the bottom of the magwell.
While still not perfect (still won't seat all mags, but it seats all of mine [Lancers & G2 Pmags], still can't pivot upper as far as usual), I've found I can live with that. For me, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks (YMMV).
So, thanks to you, Stickman, for that great idea!
