Alright guys I've got a 16" PSA upper with a mid-length gas system. It has a non-FF rail system with the standard A2 sight and gas block. I want to switch our the standard gas block with a low profile or railed version because I don't like having the front sight in my optic (aimpoint pro). I know about threading off the flash hider and all that jazz. I know how to take it off. My question is will it look fine with a non-ff quad rail on the gas block? I have searched the web and found no pictures of this anywhere and haven't found it anywhere in the forums.
Thanks. arnie |

Most low profile gas blocks are not meant to be used with the front handguard cup on the AR. One of them (PRI?) is. Anyway, if you use a gas block that is not designed to work with the hand guard cup, the gas hole in the gas block will not align with the gas hole in the barrel, because the hand guard cup will push the gas block forward on the barrel.
Why a low profile gas block. You could just cut down the FSB or use a larger railed or non-railed gas block designed to work with the hand guard cup. ETA - Check out this thread: http://beta.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=573478 |

The PRI gas block might work. I used one recently, and with the gas holes properly aligned there was a small gap between the back of the gas block and the front of the shoulder on the barrel behind the gas block. If you use a low pro gas block that clamps on with set screws, the rear set screw hole is usually in the same place as the gas hole. If you flip it around on the barrel and center the gas hole I the barrel in the rear set screw hole in the gas block, you can see if the gas holes will align with the hand guard cup in place.
If you're planning to free float later, it might be easiest to just cut down your FSB for now. |
| I may just bite the bullet and ff whenever I get the low profile gas block. I don't really see much of an advantage to it for me because most of my shooting is within 300 yards or so. Any good 10-12" free float rails or modular rails you know of that are under $200? I like dd's modular rail system, but I cant pay that much for it |
