I did a search and kept coming up with no results. At some point in time someone must have asked about vertical fore grips.
I've got a DPMS Tac2 that I love. I have a magpul angled fore grip that's been pretty good but lately I've been looking at the vertical grips and am thinking of going to one of those. I've been on Amazon and scouring the web. The Magpul one does not have great reviews. I've looked at a handful online, even some that fold, but you can't really tell by pictures and reviews alone, how well something is made or how well it will work. I'd like the opinion of the group here as to what they use and if they are worth it. I have no light or laser on my AR currently but that could be something I add in the future. I liked the Crimson Trace vertical fore grip but won't pay that much for the light/laser integration. Would you mind sharing what you use and why you like it? Thanks, John |

I use the standard Tango Down VFG. Works great on my Troy Battle Rail. Since you dont have a light/laser yet, but may in the future, you can slide out one side of the grip and it has a pocket for the tape switch. Make sure you buy an actual TD grip and not a chinese knockoff. Those do not fit the rails very well, springs will break and not lock into position, etc. |

Thanks, John This isn't overwhelmingly positive? I use the Magpul RVG, which replaced the Magpul MVG when I went from a MOE handguard to a free float. I like it very much. |

How much $$$ are you willing to spend? The Larue is awesome but costly. The RVG does a good job and is much cheaper. The TD is very popular but can be a bit of a pain to get on the rail. The Troy VFG looks nice and isn't crazy expensive. I was looking to try one not too long ago and didn't want to spend a whole lot of money until I knew that I would like a VFG.
I ended up with a MFT short VFG because it was cheap and readily available...so far I really like it. While it is still plastic it seems to have a more "rubbery" feel than the magpul RVG. The MFT clamps on the rail similar to the RVG but does look like a lot of sideways force could break it. For me, I didn't mind spending $20 on a grip to see if I even liked the feel. I'll most likely upgrade one of these days but for now, the MFT is working fine. |

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input and ideas. And I probably could have spoken better when I said the Magpul didn't have great reviews. I should have said it had some negative ones regarding that specific issue. But the majority were positive there.
I actually went with a UTG grip I picked up on Amazon. It arrived and turns out it's pretty light weight and has their version of a quick disconnect. That means you unscrew the battery holder a little bit and as it unscrews the securing mount comes down which lets the handle come off. It's not a bad design but it's plastic for that retaining tip so we'll see how it holds up. For the price, if it fails, no big deal. I'm not sure if anyone has this model or not. It has a built in slot for buttons for a light. I've never owned a light before that uses a pad to activate it. So I'm not sure if the surefire will fit or some other brand, etc. Its a UTG RBFGRP168, so if someone has this, would you let me know if you've added a light pad to it. It seems to be a similar design to some more expensive integrated pad models. The battery compartment is a little strange. You need a coin or screwdriver to really open it. And it will hold a couple of batteries. But there is a spring in the cap, which seemed odd to me. I guess maybe that's to keep the batteries pushed up against the one above it so they don't rattle around. I can't see any other reason for a spring in there. Thanks again for the help everyone! |

I hope it works out for you. UTG does not have a very good reputation here or on most weapons boards. That grip is marketed primarily for air soft use, if I recall correctly.
If you find that you do need pressure pad wells in the vertical grip, and want something more durable, solid, and American made, one of our site supporting companies, Mission First Tactical, has a neat little grip with that feature, with a battery compartment and only weighs 2.2 ounces. While it is marketed as being intended to run further back as a mag-well, grip, I run mine pretty far out front as a regular VFG and use the pad on the right side to activate an EOTech/Insight WL-1-AA laser-light combo. Very strong, solid, compact grip. Mission First Tactical Grip With Pressure Pad Wells |
