Can I remove the rail interface from the bottom of a modern leaf sight and bolt it directly to an older "cheese grater" handguard?

Possibly with the older versions. The current issue leaf sight is made by Knights Armament and is strictly rail interface. Tagged for answers.

I think that you can with the older, M4 version that has the big thumb screw knob on the side.
