What is the best way to get the castle nut off? Do I need a special wrench, or can someone recommend a substitute?
Any advice is appreciated

There are alternatives with varying degrees of but I would recommend using
a purpose-made wrench.

Yes, because then you have to re-install it.

I tried it without and it didnt work too well. I got a cheap wrench for $5 and it works like a charm, even with the nut being staked into place.
id say go ahead and buy one, if not you will probably end up buying one later for your next project

Use a small punch to bang the original indent back flush with the endplate, then use a purpose built stock wrench to power it off. Having a bench vise helps .
