Aside from added cost, have you found any drawbacks to padded slings?  Or do most feel they are a great way to keep a weapon handy over extended timeframes?

I want to order a new sling, but wonder if the basic plain webbing is fine or if the padded version is the way to go.

Thanks.

I've used a few different slings, the issued POS, the BHI 3 point, the Magpul MS2, the BHI single point, the Specter 3 point, the Spec-Ops wolf hook, the Spec-Ops (whatever it's called that will work with any weapon), the CSM single point contraption thingy that mounts to your vest, and the Blue Force Gear padded two point.  Out of all of them, I like the BFG the best.  It's simple, fast, quickly adjustable, and the padding is great for around the FOB w/o armor, and it's not too padded that it doesn't work well with armor.  The three points are too complicated, too many straps to get tangled up in, especially with pouches/armor.  The MS2 was awesome, but I felt it was too narrow, so it sucked w/o armor, and the material seemed slick, as it would slip in the buckles.  I even had my M4 hit the dirt a few times before I ended up having to double the strap through the buckles and tape it up.  Also, the sling material seemed to "pill" and snag on things, especially velcro (stupid ACU's).  I love my BFG padded sling, and I even use the BFG SAW sling for my M249.  With the neck piece removed from my IOTV, slings tend to rub on the side of my neck, and the padded sling greatly reduces the chaffing and discomfort.  It seems to twist up less also.

From my experience the padded slings do not offer the level of adjustment to tighten up the sling for a nice tight hands free fit. The padding simply gets in the way.
I prefer a 1.5" wide high quality web and it is comfortable all day long. I had a BFG padded sling and sold it bought a Booine Packer 2P-TQA in 1.5 inch width. and saved a few bucks and got a much more functional and comfortable sling in the process.

I prefer a padded 2-point. Have used BFG and LaRue / Viking, and like both.

I am usually in full gear and padded slings or extra wide slings like to turn on edge and dig into my neck.  No gear, padded or wider slings are much more comfortable.
