I'm sure this has been covered before but...
I'm new to the LPV scene. I have been using those fad rds for years. I just got a Steiner 1-4. I'm going to mount it in an Aero mount. It will be fixed not qd. I can't see the point of a rear BUIS with this mount. It would be a pia to take the scope off in the field to flip the rear sight up. So, can I reasonably use the tube of the scope and center the front BUIS in the tube and hit targets? I'm not talking nice little groups but man sized targets at 50 yards or less. If this won't work, what is the answer / solution? No, I'm not going with a qd mount. They are too heavy. . |

I've never tried it, but due to how scopes actually work, I'd imagine not. At least, it most likely won't be any better than point shooting. The other thing to think about is when you would actually have to use irons. Your Steiner has an etched reticle, so it's not like you have to worry about the electronics failing, as you'd still have a reticle to aim with. The only likely failure scenario with that optic where you'd actually need to transition to irons is if the scope is not physically able to be seen through anymore (broken glass, lenses obscured with dirt/debris, etc). At that point, you wouldn't be able to see the front sight anyway.
My advice is just skip the BUIS and if this is a rifle that absolutely must have a backup sighting system, either get a set of offset irons or deal with the very slight weight increase from a QD mount. |

Just skip the BUIS if you're using a non-QD scope mount. Or go with off-set sights.
You can't do what you describe because when a magnified optic is set to 1x, it is not like a red dot. There will be some magnification of the front sight being so close to the scope and not yet at it's minimum focal point. Here is an example of a Vortex strike eagle on 1x, note how the MBUS is slightly magnified and out of focus. |

Far from ideal but I don't see why it can't be done even with the front sight out of focus as pictured above. My new build is setup similar, P4XI in an Aero SPR mount. No bus. I have a DD front sight sitting around collecting dust. I'll try it next time I'm at the range.
I finished a stage at a local match a couple years ago when my TRS died using it as ghost ring with the front sight because on that stage the longest shot was maybe 7 yards and I only had a handful of targets left. All A zone hits. |

Skip the iron sights or if you must, put them in a very low profile offset mount.
I vote for skip them. I have been shooting and ROing 3-gun for closing in on ten years now, and I have seen a lot of guns getting knocked around, banged into barricades, dropped into dump barrels, etc. I haven't seen an optic fail yet except for red dots with batteries that died. You bought a quality optic, personally I wouldn't worry about the BUIS. Optics will take a lot more abuse than people give them credit for. Most guns get treated with kid gloves compared to what they would handle. |
