The ocular piece of the scope is kind of even with the CH. I found that it's the most comfortable position.
the other dilemma I've faced is that the proper distance somewhat changes based on whether you are looking through the scope off-hand or prone. Prone the stock needs to be extended somewhat. So you have to pick one distance fits all. Not that 5.55mm has a lot of recoil but either too far or too close is not good. I swapped the TA11 ACOG for a S&B model which has somewhat narrow range of eye relief, the TA11 was slightly superior in that regard. Looking through the pics thread (Lets see your semi-auto precision rifles), it seems many, if not most are aligned the same way. The rear of the scope is aligned with the carry handle more or less. https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_16_4/53_.html&page=44&anc=73599#i73599 |

It is completely dependent upon personal preference and how you like to shoulder/shoot the rifle (do you shoot NTCH or with the stock scooted out multiple notches?). It's also dependent on the optic (seeing as you can have a wide range of eye relief with magnified optics).
Pick what works for you and don't worry about how other people setup their rifles in pic threads, as there really is no "right" or "wrong" way to do it. |

The Trijicon and the Burris optics above have awesome eye relief, being 1-4. I've had the TR24 and it had better ER than the ACOG if I recall correctly.
You couldn't pull off that trick with a higher powered optic with worse ER. eye relief, field of view, power -- pick 2 out of 3. If I had a TR24, or a TA44, or something else with similar ER, then you can mount it in the same spot. |
