Buddy of mine asked for a scope recommendation for his rifle. I am not a scope guru so I had no idea what to tell him. I have scopes but I have them based upon what I want, not what should be there. I also have never been a hunter.

Looking for a scope to go on a  flat top .223 16" AR. He wants a "hunting style" scope as he wants to use the AR for a hunting trip. He estimated max range would be 250 yards to 300 yards. The reticle should be fairly simple for the user. $250 or under.

So what type of scope would be good for this purpose? 3x9? 1-4x24? 3-9x32? or something else?

Lets skip the whole 223 AR hunting debate. I already convinced him to take one of my 308s

A good 1-4 or 1-6 is all thats needed.  There are several options out there at that price range or slightly higher.  I have the SWFA 1-4x24 Tactical and love it.  The Vortex Strike Eagle has also been getting great reviews.  Both are slightly above that price range but glass isn't something to skimp on either.

Natchez has a Weaver Grand Slam 3-12x42 for $200.  It is a great scope, especially at this sale price.

With respect, those are not typical hunting scopes.  The objectve lens is too small for good low light performance when game is most active.

For hunting I would recommend the traditional 2-7x with an objective in tve 33-36mm range or a 3-9x40mm.  Capped turrets at 300 yards and under, and a conspicuous hunting reticle lije a Duplex or German #4 (my favorite).  Leupold VX-1, Burris Fullfield, Weaver Classic, Vortex Diamondback, Nikon Pro Staff.

I lean toward a 2-7 Leupold, Burris or Weaver Classic V-7.
