So we have access to ex-military Elcan Spectre's at work.  Not sure when they were made or what "gen" they are, but most of them are fairly "well-used.". They all work though and seem to be very rugged.  Battery life is pretty good, and overall I like them.  I'll say though that it took awhile to get used to it, and I'm still not near as fast with it compared to my Eotechs.  The center illuminated dot is nice and gives it the feel of an Aimpoint.  The 4x is great as we now routinely shoot out to 200yds and beyond.  The one huge drawback is the weight.  Those things are freaking heavy.

I've got a new DD on order now and I'm beginning the search for an optic.  I believe I'd like to try a variable scope thanks to the use of our Spectre's.  The ones I keep seeing are from either Trijicon or Leupold.  Both seem to get good reviews from here.  Basically I'm looking for Spectre like ruggedness and usefulness without the $2600 price and the weight.  Does anything like this exist?

Wolf imports a Russian version of the Spectre called a PSU 1X/4X, you might check it out, I don't remember the price. It's cheaper but it's not really cheap either, maybe $1500?

There are a bunch of quality, durable, low powered variables available that are cheaper than the Specter.  Do you have a price range you're looking to stay within?

Depending on that, some features may not compare very well (illumination brightness, glass clarity, weight, size, etc.) but they should still serve you well.

I say go with trijicon accupoint or accupower they're light clear glass and are durable. If price is not a worry then check out the VCOG, clear glass, BDC, and they're bomb proof.

Won't lose as much weight as you think. Some scope and mount combos will even weigh more.

It's possible.  Something like a VX-R Patrol 1-4x with an Aero mount could save on weight pretty significantly.  Now, one could argue that durability wouldn't be on par with that of an Elcan (as well as some other features), but it will really depend on OP's needs.

Definitely don't go with a Vortex Razor though if you think the Elcan is heavy.  The HD II 1-6x weighs more without a mount than the Elcan does with its integral mount.

Thanks guys.  I wasn't aware of the VCOG, but after researching it, they seem pretty nice.  Expensive though...almost on par with a civilian Spectre.

It would seem, for now anyways, that the Accupower might be a good compromise of everything.  Unfortunately none of the local shops have anything to try out, other than a few Leopold's.

The IOR 1-4 Pitbull and 1-6 Pitbull 2 fit a Specter-like description fairly well.  Both are pretty stout in the weight department, but Val over at IOR will give you a pretty good discount if you're MIL/LEO.

If you're even considering the VCOG, don't.  For the price, it comes nowhere near comparing to the Elcan except in durability.  Should be a $1200-$1300 optic, IMO, not the $2k+ they ask for it.

Thanks.  I'm really not.  At the advertised prices for a VCOG I'd buy an Elcan from DSG.  I'll keep searching though.

Seriously, if weight isn't all that big of a concern, take a look at the Vortex Razor HD II 1-6x.  I've personally owned an Elcan Specter as well as some other high end LPVs.  The Razor comes pretty close in glass clarity to the Elcan and has comparable illumination (entire reticle won't illuminate on the Razor, though) and durability.  The eyebox and eye relief on the Razor are actually better than the Elcan.  Only downside is the weight.

Also, it sounds like you're either military or LEO (talking about an "issue" rifle).  You can get a very good discount on Vortex scopes either from DSG or Vortex directly.  You'd be looking at approximately half the cost of the Elcan.

Thank you.  I'll look into those as well.  I have no experience with Vortex.  And yeah, LEO.
