What do you have and why do you like it?  I'm putting together a home defense gun and would like some suggestions, thanks.

A chopped carry handle and a front sight base, simple, light, effective, no switches, no hassle. I've also used the dd fixed and loved them.

Just did a phone dump and don't have any pics of the chopped, but you know what it looks like.

I have MBUS on two uppers.  They are cowitnessed with the optics.  On another upper, I run a scope, and have Aukmont 45-degree kanted sights.  On one carbine, I run the standard A2 front with an A2 handle-mounted rear, and the other carbine has the Yankee Hill Machine flip-up front sight/gas block, which are cowitnessed with the optics.

All of them are fine.

I did the A2 stuff because the barrel didn't have M4 feed ramps and I couldn't find a flat-top upper without M4 feed ramps.
I did the MBUS stuff because those were my first builds and I went with a part that had a good rep.
I did the kanted sights because cowitnessing through a scope seemed like a bad idea.
I did the YHM flip front on the second carbine because the flash hider is pinned & welded, and I wanted to be able to change it.  A2 sights are basically permanent one the pin & weld is done.

The A2 front sight is clearly sturdier than the YHM flip-up, but I don't intend to use the sight as a blunt-force weapon.

I hope that helps!

Since you will just sight in the irons, fold them down, and never use them again, all my builds now feature Magpul MBUS to save weight and money. I only use optics, just like everyone else I know. I have never actually heard of anyone deploying BUIS in a real scenario.

Krashdog, I assume those are the DD A1.5 sights in the pic.

My latest AR is my first one that came with no sights, so I'm trying to figure out what I want. I tried Magpul MBUS Pro, but the LR rear won't stay up. It's a lightweight .308 and I think the recoil is more than their design can handle. I'm sending the rear back under RMA, and we'll see if I got a bad one or if the design just won't work in this application.
Trouble is, this was a "if Hillary gets elected, I want to have this before I can't buy it anymore" purchase and I really don't know how I want it setup.  I figured folding sights would give me maximum flexibility, but if they're not going to be reliable, perhaps fixed is best and if I want to scope it for some uses, just remove the rear.

My other ARs are stock iron sights on one and a cut carry handle style rear + Aimpoint PRO on the other, both with fixed
fronts.  With the Aimpoint, I've never minded using the dot either through or over the rear sight.

I do actually have a spare Bushmaster carry handle. I suppose cutting it is an option.

I currently own and use, MBUS, diamondhead, troy, and daniel defense, iron sights, and have in the past used the lmt. I really like the diamondhead for more precise shooting, but as far as quick use amd what sits on my guns I use the hardest, its the daniel defense. They are well made, solid as a rock, and repeatable enough for anything i would ever do within 200 yards.

If you want fixed, go Daniel Defense...no question.

If you are looking for BUIS, check KAC or Troy

Aero precision is also making irons now. I haven't tried them, but am definatly a fan of aero products.

Unrelated but is your handguard from bigcountryrifleaccesories? I have one on my SPR and love it. Super underrated and quality for $125.

Home Defense? Get an Aimpoint

For BUIS, I'd get KAC micros or Magpul Pros

I have an LMT front with a cut down A2 carry handle.  The DD's would be lighter and simpler though.  The both weigh in at about 7 ounces.  The front is 2 and rear is 7.  I think that DD rear is quite a bit lighter.  I want one.
