I'm currently getting together parts for a budget SPR type build and need a scope to act as a placeholder until I can do better.
It will likely remain in my possesion as a spare or used on a sporting rifle later.

Leupold VX-1 3x9x40 can currently be had for:

$199.99
-$20.00 Coupon
-$50.00 Rebate

$129.99 Net

Anything out there better for around $130?

Or spend that money on ammo and get used to shooting with irons for when/if you ever need them?

Nah, that's a good deal. It won't have all the bells and whistles, but the glass is probably better than anything you'll find for $130. You'll be good out to 200 - 300 yards without worrying about too much drop anyway.

Lifetime warranty, so once you replace it, the Leopold will be fine as a beater or whatever you would like to use it on.

Not going to run irons on the 20" Rifle. It's intended for 100-600 yard work.
I have a Ma Tech BUIS on my 16" Mid Gas along with my PA Micro Dot.
I have to revert to irons beyond 100 yards as I can't place the Dot with enough precision.
Even at that my old eyes are not really up to it.

That current rebate on VX-1 scopes makes them a very attractive choice.  Its a nice well made quality scope and very light weight.  I have both the 2-7x and 3-9x versions on hunting rifles and they perform well.  Even if it is a place holder, it is good enough to keep for some other general purpose rifle.

That's a good price on a Leupold.

Can I ask which seller is offering the $20 coupon?

I had bought some other stuff from Optics Planet and they sent me a card with a Coupon Code in the box.

Of course if you don't have one just put anything at all in the coupon code box and it will usually "suggest" a good code that's at least 5% off .

I decided to go with the VX1 2-7×33 instead at the same price.
I've decided it will eventually end up on my CZ452 after resetting the parallex . The Nikon 4x32 is getting kind of old and I'm not sure a 40mm objective will work with the current mounts.
