Just wanted to comment on a 30MM SSALT mount I just purchased. I was curious as to whether it would need lapping or not.
I used the Wheeler lapping and alignment kit to check the alignment and it was absolutely perfect point on point. At that point I decided not even to bother with the actual lapping rod and making a mess. Anyone think there is benefit to lapping the mount? I imagine contact surfaces are probably pretty good to get perfect alignment. |

I'd say you're GTG, OP.
If I ever bought a 1-piece mount from a reputable manufacturer that needed lapping, I'd be sending it back for a refund or a replacement. I can see the importance/benefit of lapping scope rings where you're making sure that separate pieces are in correct and precise alignment with one another, but in my opinion a 1-piece mount that is milled correctly should never have this issue. |
