What's "best" for you? What's your budget and the intended use? (competition? home defense? range toy? etc)

Budget? Magnification or non-magnification?

Under $2,000 just haven't decided on magnification quite yet just wanting to see what some people are running because I got a little bushnell.

Aimpoint makes really solid red dots, but if you're shooting anything other than CQB, I'd suggest going with a 1-6x optic.  Unless you've got really young eyes, you're going to need some magnification for the distant steel you'll find in a typical match.

There are many choices, but you certainly can't go wrong with a Vortex Gen 2 Razor 1-6x24

With under 2000 why not just go with a specterdr? You get both magnified and not magnified all in the same package for the price you want.

2000 is basically the upper ceiling of most optics. Most reddots cost under 1000 dollars, including very high end ones like aimpoint, eotech, trijicon, etc.

There is a separate optics subforum here.  I think mods will probably come along and move this to it.

In the interim, here is a solution:   Do both - red dot and medium powered scope in QD mounts.  You can remove and replace them and retain zero if you get high quality QD mounts.  Sight your red dot (preferably a very light one) in the 45 degree offset position for 50 yards, and a mid powered scope up top zeroed for either 100 yards or for point blank range such as 50/250, depending on reticle..

If both are motion activated, as are mine, or the dot is kept on all the time you are always ready with no concerns about battery life (at least not for years).  The scope identity is obvious.  The dot is Leupold's duty grade DeltaPoint Pro.

The combo, if chosen wisely, can be lighter than most QD mounted 1-6x scopes, more versatile, with higher top end magnification and better low light performance with the larger objective.

For home defense, or indoor shooting, remove the scope and put the red dot up top.  Since it was zeroed for 45 degree offset for shooting at 50 yards, it will not be exactly zeroed when moved to the top rail.  But it will still be easily close enough for encounters at home defense distances.  And the rifle will be much lighter when just running the dot.

Here is what I did.  The entire package $600 scope, $600 red dot and two high quality QD return to zero mounts is well under $2,000.

And, same rifle in home defense mode:

You don't have to compromise with a 1-6.  You can do both.   Just a thought to contemplate.
