I am finishing up my AR-10, and looking for suggestions on optics. What size/power is not enough or to much for an AR-10?
Build
PSA PA10 .308 Complete Classic Lower Receiver
PSA PA10 Stripped Upper Receiver
PSA Nitride .308 Bolt Carrier Group with FA Serrations
Rainier Arms Select .308 Barrel-Matte Stainless 18"
Syrac Ordnance Gen II Click-Adjustable Clamp On Gas Block, Low Profile Stainless Steel

My buddy uses and has good luck with Optisan optics, and I was looking at this one.
Optisan Viper 6-24x56sf

Is it to much of a scope, not enough?
Thanks

Depends on your intended use.  It weighs 30 ounces and is about 16.5" long before adding the 3" sunshade which you will need.  It has very fine 1/8 MOA click target turrets.   This means it is pretty much relegated to long range precision shooting.  The 56mm objective lens will also set it up pretty high.  I have not done the math, but it might not have enough clearance with standard height mounts, especially if you have a relatively short barrel and have a folded front sight.

I have a 6x24x50mm Burris Black Diamond (actually co-branded with Pentax) that I use for load development.  I had to mount it in the high Larue LT-135 (1.93" high) mount to clear the front, yes, I said front folded sight on a 16" barrel when the sunshade is attached.

It, too, has 1/8 MOA fine target knobs.  That is fine if you are shooting at a fixed range target at a known distance.  But, it makes for a lot of twisting if you have to change elevation frequently.

I love the Black Diamond in its role.  It formerly was on a long range precision bolt gun, but I have since placed a MRAD based scope on that rifle.

The scope has a good reputation at its price point, and would be good for a nitch type of use, but might not be a good choice if you need versatility.

I was in your same dilemma about a year ago. I needed a scope for my Noveske N6 18". Didn't want to let the rifle down by mounting a mediocre scope on it. That's natural right? $2400 rifle needs at least a $1300 scope? Haha.

I went through all kinds of scenarios and took peeks through many scopes before settling on a Nightforce NXS 8-32 x 56. Then went with an ARC M10 mount with 30 MOA incline. This is pretty much top notch for my price range.

Here are some things to remember on your journey to your ideal scope.:
A)Glass quality : #1 German (S&B, Zeiss) #2 Japanese (Leup, NF) #3 Chinese.
B)Focal Plane: First focal plane (FFP) or Second (SFP). research the two and understand what makes them different. I can live with SFP. Some people insist on FFP.
C)Magnifation desired: I wanted ALOT. Why not right? I'll tell you, the mag difference between x14 and x32 might not be as strong as you think. But you might as well.
D)Warranty
E)Reticle options and turrets.  Ideally adjustment turrets should be mil/mil or MOA/MOA. But even spec ops use scopes that are mil/MOA configurations, so u decide.

Price!!!! How much you willing to spend? You can comb the EE, or Snipershide.com trade board has good deals. Lightly used is a good way to save some money.

My intended use will be shooting paper/plates, etc at 500+ yards. It might go on a hunt here and there, but not it's intended use. I have bolt guns for hunting.
Thanks for the heads up on the 56mm objective making it set up pretty high, I hadn't even thought about that. Something to look at before deciding on one.
18" barrel, and I had planned to only run a scope, no open sights.

That makes sense with the 1/8 MOA fine target knobs, another issue I hadn't thought about. Would a 1/4 MOA suit me better?

Thanks for the reply and the points to remember. I will look into them and figure out which suits my needs.

I wouldn't compare my PSA PA-10 anywhere close to a $2400 Noveske, and I am well aware it isn't considered a high end precision rifle. I have around $1100 in the build and looking to spend $4-$500 on optics.

I have the SWFA 3-15 on my AR10 and for my uses which is steel to 1k and coyotes and an occasional deer under 500yds it works great for me.

FWIW - This NF 2.5-10x24 worked great for most of my needs out to 500 yards.  I used it for quite a while.  It was light weight with great clarity although eventually I got out past 500 yards and more magnification became something I wanted.  I also wanted exposed turrets.
Enter the NF 3.5-15x50.  Other than the weight, this might be the perfect scope for me and my needs.  It has plenty of magnification out to 1000 yards which is as far as I've been able to go...and probably at teh far end of me and my rifles capabilities.

I think your magnification range is the single most important factor to consider followed by reticle choice...weight should be considered as well but not a deal breaker.  Lastly, don't go cheap on glass.  Buy the best glass you can afford.  Clarity in a scope past 500 yards is a must and inexpensive scopes with 20x zoom may seem like a good deal but be sure you look through them with the magnification set on 20x.  You may find that things start to get a little blurry.

This setup with BogPod is just way too much fun!

For the under $500 optic I have a Nikon M308 4-16 on my AR10. It was actually a reconditioned one from Natchez at $369. And it came with the M308 mount and Nikon flip up scope covers. I believe the M308 scopes still come with the mount which is a great value-added point.

Thank you for the replies. All good points, a few of them are a bit out of my price range.

Has anyone mounted a 6-24x56 on their AR-10? What mounts? issues?

Anyone have any feedback on this brand?.
