| I've been looking at the Vortex spitfire 3x red dot lately. I kind of like the idea of a little magnification in a red dot. So does anybody have one? What do you think? What is a "prism" scope? And finally, do you think you could still use this red dot for home defense? Or does the magnification make it too much for CQB? Lots of questions, I know. Thanks! |

The simplest way to put it is that these are a poor/common man's ACOG. They are a compact scope using a prism instead of the large lens assembly. Durable as hell though. They don't have the unlimited eye relief like a red dot though, same eye box as a scope. All the reviews I've seen, people love them. Vortex's warranty is incredibly good in case you actually manage to break it/run your rifle over. Indoors/close range, you should be able to use it as a BAC optic with both eyes open. That said, someone will need to verify that last. |
| My brother bought a Spitfire 3x recently for his flat top AR. I tried it and generally liked it. Good Clear optics. The upside down horse shoe reticle takes a little getting used to. Red and green illumination is nice. About the only problem we had was the short eye relief distance of about 2.5". On a flat top AR upper, we had to move the flip up BUIS and this optic as far to the rear as possible, and then the eye relief pretty much forces a nose to charging handle stance. If you are not using a BUIS, you can mount this fully to the rear of the rail on a flat top and get OK eye relief. Otherwise nice build quality and feel. I they would update it with longer eye relief, I would be all over one. |
