Looking for an optic to use on a general purpose .308 carbine for deer, goes, etc. I like the Nikon M223 1-4x and 2-8x scopes. Nikon makes an M308 line it they're all higher mag, larger scopes. As long as I get the Nikoplex reticle and not the BDC, is there any reason to not use these on a .308?
Any other suggestions for low power scope for an AR-10 carbine $250-400 price range? |

Weaver 3-10x40mm Grand Slam Tactical, MidwayUSA exclusive. $299. Best value for good Japanese glass, accurate milrad turrets and mildot reticle. Very popular here and highly regarded.
Another choice at about the same price is the non-illuminated 1.5-4x20mm Leupold Mark AR, if you want lower magnification. Also milrad turrets and milrad based SPR reticle. I hate the hokey Nikon BDC reticles and agree with your preference for the Nikoplex. But, if you can put up with the clutter of all those open circles, Nikon's Spot On free software will let you assign holdover values for each circle for any ammo you use, even .308. I recommend mrad turrets and reticles on a factical rifle, even one used for hunting. |

It almost looks too small/subtle to be any quicker to pick up. |

I was using an M223 2-8x on my SRC308 and my Colt 901. I was getting some weird shooting patterns with the SRC308, almost like it was jumping back and forth diagonally a couple of inches or so, but I am not ready to blame the scope. The scope has worked fine on three or four AR15s, and the Colt 901. I am not sure if the recoil on the SRC308 was higher, possibly causing an internal shift in the scope, or if the higher perceived recoil was causing me to shoot erratically.
Even if it was the scope, it may be a defect in my particular unit which does not present itself with other rifles. Both me and the range officer where I shoot were experiencing the same shift with the SRC308 and that scope. The 308 version of the scope is quite a bit more expensive. That may be because it is beefed up internally. I can't see a simple reticle and turrets change causing that large of a price difference between the two. |
