So I got a pair of plain old Magpul MBUS today and threw them on my AR. Once it started to get dusk out I took it in the backyard to bore sight it only to see that the laser at 100 yards was slightly to the right of the front post sight. I thought that bore sighting was only for elevation and not windage? Is that normal or is it possible my rail or barrel is crooked somehow? The rail looks pretty straight to me looking dead on.

Also here are some pictures of my sight picture and the rail. The rail looks pretty damn crooked to me for some reason? Its a Seekins rail so not sure how that can be fixed?

Why would the Dallas method only be for elevation?

I'm kind of confused.  Why not just adjust the windage on the back sight to make the laser align with the sights?  The laser bore sights are not dead on, it is just to get you close/ on paper.  The laser bore sights worked better at closer ranges (25-50yds) the few times I have used them.  Now I  just remove the upper from the lower and look down the barrel to align my sights, RDS or scope.

It's for both windage and elevation but its primary purpose is just to get your initial zero rounds on paper. You'll still need to zero it after boresighting.

Your bullet will not hit where the laser points, anyway.  Bullet trajectory, height above the bore, relationship of rail to barrel (not perfectly parallel),  barrel harmonics and many other factors influence both elevation and windage.  Just use the laser to get on paper at about 25 yards and use your sight adjustments from there to fine tune for longer range, such as the 50/250 battle zero.

Ah, I thought it was just for elevation since the rear sight is centered on the upper and aligned with the barrel I didnt see the need to adjust windage. The rail was crooked though, took it to my local smith to have a look at and he agreed, was canted slightly to the left.
