Searching for a scope that will be useful incase shit hits the fan one day. I am ruling out any red dot that uses batteries because once that goes it renders it useless. what do you guys think?
they got this one that is self illuminating. http://www.amazon.com/Meprolight-Self-Powered-Night-Reflex-Reticle/dp/B004O6IB6Q/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1437073333&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=self+illumiation+sight |

I think that's a retarded idea.
Instead of planning for some implausible scenario, buy a nice scope and a package of batteries. The batteries that power Aimpoint Micros and Nightforce NXS scopes have a shelf life of ten years. I don't think you can gunfight on your own for nearly that long without batteries since your enemies are all going to have batteries. |

The optic you linked uses tritium. Tritium doesn't last as long as batteries. It also washes out in various lighting conditions, meaning it sucked the day it rolled out the assembly plant door. A battery powered RDS is the way to go, for CQB type things. Period. End of story. No exclusionary criteria. IF you are worried about your RDS dying roughly 2 decades after SHTF, because all of the batteries (well, most) will be a no-go by then, then that means you had 20 years to learn how to use your irons. |

I don't think you can gunfight on your own for nearly that long without batteries since your enemies are all going to have batteries. They have a shelf life...but will they make it further? I think they will, based on the CR2032 powered automobile key-fobs from the 90's floating around on original batteries. I think they will, because the self-discharge rate for that battery is 1-1.5% per year. I think they will, considering CR123's that are 10 years old have been tested in the real world to ALMOST be as good as brand new one's. I think a properly stored CR2032 battery is quite likely to last 15+ years. OP, if you really want to go all-out, get a Comp M4 aimpoint and Energizer L91 batteries. 20 year shelf-life. Roughly 1 decade of run-time per battery in that optic (100K hours). BOOM. You now have a battery powered optic with almost double the life of the POS you linked in your OP. |

I used to shoot with a guy who owned one. I remember that, for some reason, the sight picture kept shifting around; and the factory replaced it - not once, but - twice. I used that sight a few times; and I remember thinking to myself that I wouldn't buy one. I haven't seen the fellow in a while, now; and I don't know the final outcome of what happened with his troublesome Meprolight scope?
I assume you know that Trijicon, 'rules' this optical realm - Right! ADDED: Just read all the replies that came in during the few minutes it took me to type and post a reply of my own. Hilarious! We are living in an almost completely bankrupt nation - One that is being grossly mismanaged, and continues to do nothing but spend, spend, spend! (Mostly on enormous social giveaways and public welfare to a veritable flood of illegal immigrants who have already overrun, and are presently continuing to overrun, our borders.) Yet everyone I know (except for a few people who work with money everyday) have their heads stuck up their butts and completely fail to realize that America is imminently destined to experience a financial, 'crash 'n burn' scenario far worse than anything that's already happened in either Argentina, or Greece! No Armageddon, you say! Well, maybe not in a biblical sense (or, at least, not yet) but in both social and financial regards: An Armageddon of some sort is absolutely inevitable - Inevitable! Worse, this enormous financial catastrophe along with all of its ugly social implications - e.g.: food shortages, currency collapse, energy crises, etc., etc., etc. - is going to arrive a whole lot sooner than everybody thinks. So far the Greeks have been quietly suffering while they endure high unemployment along with all sorts of incumbent shortages; but, years ago, when a severe financial collapse hit Argentina, it was neighbor turning upon neighbor - Especially in the big cities! Meprolight's reflex sight might not be too bright; but, no matter what, it can't be as dim as America's financial future! We've just about, 'run the course', people.
(And, now, the inevitable naysayers!) |

Shtf will happen. This country will collapse due to financial implosion, Russian nukes, or a false flag attack by the US government to declare martial law.
That being said, an Aimpoint and a hand full of batteries should be good. By the time your batteries are depleted, you will a. Be dead or b. Have a cool new gun collection. This country is disintegrating before our very eyes. It will go exponential at some point. |

It gets powered somehow and that somehow is generally by a radioactive isotope such as tritium that generally has a half life of about 12 years. After that point you'll need to send it in and get it "recharged" so to speak. With that said, in a doomsday scenario I would think you'd be even more screwed. However, I think well before the 12 years mark your weapon would be mostly useless anyways due to lack of care and parts. I honestly think in a doomsday situation where mankind gets set back a 1000 years and all that stuff, a gun would be the most useless item out of anything. |

makes sense... been reading on the aimpoint battery life so I am leaning that way love the eotech though.. EOTech battery life isn't even in the same universe as an Aimpoint. If you want EO Tech AA battery try the Meprolight brand. |

I've owned the Meprolight M21 (current IDF issue so it has a proven combat record) and IMHO it's the best KISS optic currently available. No batteries, switches, electronics or adjustments to worry about, just pick it up and use it. Compared to Trijicon's RX30/RX34 (which I've owned), the M21 is also more resistant (but not immune to ) reticle washout in certain lighting conditions that's the bane of all tritium/fiber optic sights and the M21's reticle doesn't bloom/distort in bright sunlight.
The M21's tritium has a half-life of appx 12yrs, so in 12yrs the reticle is half as bright as when new and in 24yrs will be 1/4 as bright as when new. The M21 is certainly not perfect, and while arguably more rugged than battery-powered RDS', the exceptional battery life available in current quality RDS' shouldn't count them out when looking for the perfect 'shtf' optic. I'm currently using the new Meprolight Tru-Dot RDS and to date I've been very pleased with it. It uses my fav 'AA' battery (as mentioned earlier, w/a solar charger & rechargeables, you need never run out of batteries), comes w/a large Eotech-style window for a wide FOV through the optic, has an ergonomic rotary switch w/only 'off', 'high', 'medium', 'low' and 'NV' settings so it's quick/easy to adjust (do we really need 12-20 different brightness settings?), has a decent integral QD mount, an interesting auto-on/off feature that automatically shuts the optic off if no movement detected for 30 minutes yet reactivates at the slightest touch and a nice small 1.8moa dot. IIRC, the Meprolight RDS is currently available on Amazon for $349. Tomac |

A SHTF post Apocalypse scope doesn't require any illumination. if you need magnification fixed power optics are the most robust, go ACOG or better yet Elcan Specter. Elcan's optics are bar none the best on earth, Leitz (Leica in US) makes optics for scientific imaging, surveying and space observation. Iron sights have been serving well for several hundred years. KAC micro 600m rear sight ( an exact copy of the marbles peep sight, which has been making kills past 1000 yds for over a century) and any quality front sight will always work. NO BATTERIES REQUIRED. |

Really, in the incredibly unlikely scenario you survive an equally incredibly unlikely 'SHTF scenario', I highly doubt you'll be dead if only you'd bought an ACOG instead of an Aimpoint, or whatever brand. I'll get off my soapbox and read the script for these weekly SHTF posts: Aimpoints and batteries last ten years (if the world is so fucked you can't get a new battery in ten years, you're probably fucked in general). Tritium has a half-life of 10-12 (this is the time to reach half brightness, not its death). In reality none of this will ever happen, and if it does, which optic is on your carbine is the least of your concern. Having a gun and ammo at all, let alone a fighting rifle with high-end optic, puts you ahead of 99% of the others in this masturbatory Walter Mitty fantasy. Fullstopendrant. If I were playing the SHTF game, I'd be less worried about tritium vs AAs, and more worried about being in good shape and having a nice supply of food, water, and toilet paper. |

Iron sights? Yeah... OK... but how long will it take them to rust off? Hahahah make them out of polymer...... Or etched glass optics..... Good larue mount and proper etched reticle then release and use a set of irons... |
| My vote is aimpoint m4s. Batteries last about 10 years constant on with L91s, and that battery has a 20 year shelf life. Last I checked, one of the Aimpoint reps was on spike 100+ on concrete. Notables such as Lee Ermey have tried their hand at breaking that optic (overhead spike onto concrete) and it's still holding zero and working fine. It will work night or day and provide rapid aquisition and hits. I believe it more likely you would fall and or drop or whatever a traditional scope and it break before the m4s ran out of batteries in a hard use shtf mad max world. |

Not a huge amount of though in this. If you have the $, go big (Acog). If not, go cheap (TRS-25), either way, you'd be fine (zombies don't shoot back at you). I'd go with a 1-6 accupoint, and a M4s, keep the M4s and batts packed up until the Accupoint fails. That would give you close to 20 years until its using the irons. I disagree. I saw a test a while back where dacade old surefire cr123s were used in a light and runtime and output measured. They were within spitting distance of brand new Surefire cr123s, yet they are only rated for 10 years. Typically a battery is rated to the point that about 90% of its charge remains. They are kindof like eggs, as best I understand. You don't throw them out the day they "expire", but you are losing a bit of the taste and you should be careful of duds. Make sense? See, as a civilian, 0 to 100 yards is definitely your issue in most places. And night time is when violent crime often happens. Literally nothing beats a quality battery powered 1x optic for that. Nothing. So if someone who would otherwise buy an Aimpoint gets an acog because "....but batteries!" then they have traded immediate utility for a fantasy situation. It would be like killing yourself as soon as SHTF so that you don't risk someone else killing you more painfully. |

Any robust sight will be good. More than one would be better. I'd go with a nice variable for more range and target ID purposes. I think, based on the Holosun 503C, that solar can be done well and integrated in with LED--so I look forward to more attempts like the Trij SRS that are better.
But there should be a lot of options if you survive. PS: the corporations hide and take more money than all the illegal immigrants. This country may not be the super power it was in the 1950s and 1960s (back when the rich paid up to 90% tax rates), but it's gonna be okay. It's true that we have a problem when the richest 80 people have as much wealth as the poorest 50% on the planet--as radical wealth disparity is bad for a healthy, functioning democracy--but there are fixes for that (besides police states and revolutions, which is how it usually ends). We will stop using non-renewable energy once the costs get too high, and the climate-immigrants won't be coming here. |

Going to be very hard to beat one of the ACOGs that have the fiber optic source...
but like mentioned above, Aimpoints are going to run a very long time. You also could pick up one of the Trijicon Accupoints TR24 or similar. They are pricey (1000 and up) but are very nice. No batteries. |

I'm biased, but the TR24G was my pick.
Tritium+fiber. When both of those fail you, you still have a black post and triangle. 1-4x will solve most issues fairly well. A flashlight is still required for lowlight needs. Just looking for one that is powered by compost, recoil or tears. |

Why not just get an etched reticle 1-4x20 scope. That way if your batteries die you still have cross-hairs you can use plus you can use it for CQB on 1x or at range with the 4x. But what if OP drops the more complicated optic or bangs it hard on something 1 too many times? My nightforce nxs 1-4 is missing a decent size chunk on the eyepiece side and shes still ticking just fine. I dont see it breaking anytime soon lol. I also have a case of 2032 batteries but the original one still hasnt died. Yep. The nxs is a tank. Its still not as robust as a comp m4. My comment was mainly facetious though as I doubt OP can "operate" in 160*f temps, or take a 30 meter dunking, or a 1000g impact from the side. You have to draw the line somewhere... |

Not a huge amount of though in this. If you have the $, go big (Acog). If not, go cheap (TRS-25), either way, you'd be fine (zombies don't shoot back at you). ETA: there is also the optic known as a "scope" (this magical magnifying device that uses NO batteries and does surprisingly well in low light!). Alas.. when/if THAT fails... again... iron sights. Sorry if this comes across as smart ass... I'm just being sarcastic and trying to realistic (even in the event of zombies taking over). This mentality bothers me. If SHTF (which it likely won't), we will just live in third world conditions, like most of the world. There's not going to be street gun battles on a daily basis you paranoid weirdos ![]() ETA: RDS are 0x, not 1x. There's no "optic" per se, it's just a flat lens that reflects the dot to your eye. Pretty sure 0x is just closing your eyes. That's totally incorrect. On the other hand, an Aimpoint/Eotech does not magnify and allows co witness and because there is no magnification, hence 0X. |

And what is 1x your normal vision? Still your normal vision. If you took 0x your normal vision, you would have no vision. I know I went to public schools, but geez...
Go Google a 0x scope and tell me what you find. You'll find a Chinese scope on eBay from China. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Swift-Tactical-Red-Green-Dot-Rifle-Scope-0x-/200514288170 Optics manufacturers that claim a 1-4x are stating that the 1 is near 1, not absolute. It's close, but the optics still cause distortion. It's close enough to 1, that the just call it 1. |

That's totally incorrect. X stands for magnification, as in 4X magnifies the image 4 times your normal vision. An optic with shaped lenses that can magnify, like a 1-4x scope magnifies through lenses, even at 1X. That is why you can't co witness iron sights through a scope like that. On the other hand, an Aimpoint/Eotech does not magnify and allows co witness and because there is no magnification, hence 0X. You're wrong. You even disagree with your own post. You say that 4x is 4 times your normal vision. So what do you think 1x is using your own logic? 0.5x would be half your normal vision, as in, objects appear twice as far from you as they are (I know...now we are getting complicated with 0.5x being a 100% visual distance increase in the negative. Maybe I shouldn't take you there.) 0x would be 0 times your normal vision, per your logic of 4x=4 times. And 0 is nothing, yes? |
