What's the major difference in these two optics and is it really worth the extra money for someone like me who's just going plinking at the range and Home Defense?

Better battery life, deeper submersion, integrated mount such that the optic cant rotate, and a battery switch design that will allow the dot to stay on even if the knob were broken off.

Likely a non issue for all, but its your money

The differences can be found on Aimpoint's website, very easily.

This, plus a voltage regulator that allows you to use any 'AA' size battery regardless of voltage. Nothing wrong w/the Pro, but I prefer the M4 (YMMV).

One is built like a tank and the other is like an IFV. They both get the job done, but one can take a hell of a lot more beating than the other

How does the M3 stack up? Is it just a Pro with NV capability or is it more durable?

If you shop around and are vigilant in your search, you can sometimes find a good used CompM4/CompM4s in the sub $500 range.  For me the M4 feature set is worth the extra cheddar, especially if we're talking about a no fail work gun.  Not saying the PRO is insufficient for serious use, but I prefer the added durability of the M4/M4s.

I've grilled the Aimpoint tech guys on that very same question several times.  They won't come out and say it, but they kinda say it's the same optic with a different name...

The PRO is more than up to the task for HD, I'd bet my life on one.  The M4 is better in every category, but also double the MSRP and overkill IMO for the HD role.

For your purposes, you are much better off with the PRO. You have WAY more mounting options with the PRO because you can use ring mounts. The guts are pretty much the same as the CompM4 and its cheaper. IMO the only thing the CompM4 has on the PRO is that it uses AA batteries. But the battery life for both is like 3+ years of continuous use. Not really an issue unless stores that sell batteries cease to exist anymore...as in SHTF.

Aren't these types of questions the core purpose of arfcom? When I use google to search for product information, arfcom almost always outranks the manufacturer's site.

Your are correct this is a technical website.

I personally say get a used aimpoint comp m4 chances are you wont be able to kill it

I see them go for 400-600$ all the time I got my first one for $500 mint box ect and 2nd one for 445$ mint box ect

All modern aimpoints  have great battery life but the m4 beats the rest and it runs on a AA

Some guys think it's overkill for HD but I do not, some politicians and people ect also think having more than 10 round mags are overkill for HD I disagree get what your happy with

Aimpoint M4= 3 year battery life on max power 8-10 years on nominal settings
Better power knob *look it up older style knobs like pro m2-m3 series were easy to bump or break in situations when you would not want them
Clear glass no blue tint *like the pro* , also built in mount

Also I've used the aimpoint website comparison thingy it sucks and they leave out many key differences you are in the right place to ask any questions don't let anyone discourage you if I can answer any questions feel free to pm me.

On a side note other than buying a pro for the sake of having it new I don't see why guys buy pros when aimpoint m4 optics are all in sub $500 price range I think some guys just don't know or like the old style aimpoint m2 look

I have $500 in my M4 and Larue Mount.  I can't complain if it isn't pretty.  I am very happy to have it.

The difference is the glass and battery life

The m3 battery life is rated 5 years the pro battery life is rated 3 years

I paid $425 for my "like new" CompM4s.  And the battery life can last up 8 years of continuous use depending on power setting.  I keep mine powered up at a fairly low yet visible setting.  FWIW, I prefer the aesthetics of the CompM4s over the PRO or any other Aimpoint besides the micro.  Yeah, it's a big hunk of optic, but it feels good knowing that it will take anything you could throw at it and likely survive.
