Was looking at spotting scopes and was looking for some opinions out there. I just want something to let me see .223 holes out to 200 yards or so. I don't need or desire something in the $1,000 -$4,000 territory. I am also not trying to see mountain goats 23 miles away or .17 hmr holes at 300 yards.
I was looking at the something like the Redfield Rampage 20-60 x 80 or Leupold SX-1 Ventana 15-45 x 60. I understand that the 60x on the Redfield will not be the greatest, and that at that range of magnification, mirage and environmental factors will be the biggest detractor for the image. I guess I want to know in general, will a better scope with slightly lower magnification still provide a better image for intermediate ranges than say the Redield with the larger 80mm Objective? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

The Leupold would be a better choice. Frankly, for your simple needs a low end straighr eyepiece Nikon Prostaff like this would do fine. You will find that you will not need to go above 25 to 30x at 200 yards to see the holes. I have a better Nikon Fieldscope (about $1000), but the little Prostaff or that Leupold you are considering will handle your task. |
